- Saw your story r.e. WATERSHIP DOWN being broadcast over Easter on Ch...annel 5, and the various complaints about it. You may be interested in this: the BBFC have always classified this film as a "U" certificate, and not - as some complainants have stated - a PG. (Any versions of the film's release on VHS/DVD with a PG rating, were because the tape/disc contained trailers or extras that weren't "U" rated!) That said, even the BBFC have said: "While the film has a happy ending and contains many positive messages for young audiences about bravery, friendship and the environment, younger or more sensitive viewers have found some scenes upsetting or worrying, and over the years the BBFC has received numerous complaints about the suitability of Watership Down at U." (See the first of the two links below for the evidence.) This suggests that, if the film were to arrive at the BBFC's doors today, they would probably NOT classify it at such a low rating, and would almost certainly give it a PG. Bear in mind that a "U"-rated film that contains violence... "will generally be very mild. A U film may include brief fight scenes or moments where characters are placed in danger. However, moments of emotional stress or threat will be quickly resolved and the outcome will be reassuring. There may be brief scary scenes and moments where the characters are placed in danger. As with violence, however, these scenes will be balanced by reassuring elements, such as comic interludes or music." It could quite easily be argued, that this advice should NOT apply to WATERSHIP DOWN, and that the PG rating for violence, which says.. "Violence will usually be mild. There should be no detail of violence in a PG work, so while there might be some blood, we would not see how the injury was inflicted in strong detail. As far as threat and horror goes, we allow some 'jump' moments and frightening sequences as long as they are not prolonged or intense. Fantasy settings may again be a factor in the treatment of such content." ...would be more applicable to the film's controversial nature - irrespective of whether the film's story/theme is not aimed at very young viewers. Still, it's interesting to see a film like this, be so provocative and daring and causing so much concern, even 38 years after its original release! http://bbfc.co.uk/case-studies/archive/watership-down See More
- Hi Dave, Just thought you'd like an answer to your question, about ...why "The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie" UK Blu-ray release was "missing 1:08s for reasons unknown". Firstly, the DVD is the same version as the Blu-Ray release, so won't be "uncut" per se. However, the version that has been released in both the UK and US on Blu-Ray, is the US Theatrical Cut, as approved by Troma head honcho Lloyd Kaufman. Basically, for reasons he won't say, Kaufman doesn't like the longer, so-called "Director's Cut" featuring the more explicit scenes of violence, especially in the scenes in the video store at the beginning of the film. About 1m 08s of material is missing, all from the opening "Video Rental Shop" fight sequence. You lose: - a beheading - a man having his intestines removed, and then him being strangled with them - another man having his hand put into a video-cassette deck, and his hand and fingers being mashed-up/blended You can also hear the "cuts" or "jumps" in the audio soundtrack, as they are quite jarring. As such, when the film came to be remastered in HD for Blu-Ray, he decided to go with the US Theatrical release, which is less violent. I don't know why he did this, but he did. As such, all HD/Blu-Ray releases of Part 3 will be the same, R-rated Theatrical Version of the film. If people want the longer, so-called "Director's Cut", they will need to purchase one of the many US/European DVD releases, that contain the missing footage, though I think some of them are in 4:3 only. So, people will need to check carefully, before they buy, to make sure they are getting the version they actually want. But that extra footage will NOT be turning-up in any future Blu-Ray releases anytime soon, because - rightly or wrongly - that is Kaufman's personal decision! See More
