We’ve hammered the walleyes on the DR the past two days; boxed 4 man limits both days in just a few hours. Even though the water remains unusually cold, the small males are very active and smash the jig with abandon! Going again in the morning with my group from Cincinnati OH.
Had a good day on the water with Wayne and his future son-in-law Dale. We ran all over the river looking for fish and fewer boats. Ended up with a nice limit of eyes, and a great meal at the Speedboat Bar & Grill in Wyandotte! Thanks Wayne!
We had a good day on the Detroit River, jigging up a 3-man limit of walleyes in Canadian water! That side of the DR is stacked full of walleyes right now, the water temp is coming up slowly to nearly ideal, and it should be clearing up in the next few days; I expect an excellent bite is coming!
Greg Walsh caught his new PB Walleye today on the D ! Very cold morning, tons of good marks but they had lockjaw til afternoon. Once the water temp came up from 36 to 39, the fish became more active after 1 pm. Greg released this gorgeous 29”, 8 1/2 lb hen to spawn and make many more good memories! Thanks Greg Walsh for bringing Nick Walsh fishing today !
Good afternoon trip on the DR today. Water was 37F, and the Walleyes were spotty at best. Very light and variable breeze made for nearly flat conditions; easy boat control for vertical jigging. Most fish came on 3/4 or 1 Oz purple jigs tipped with an emerald shiner and slowly presented close to the bottom. All of the fish we boxed were in 32-37 fow along the deep shipping channel edges.
Here’s a couple pics of Jon with some nice eyes, across from US Steel. A big shout out and thanks to Nick Homayed for putting us on these active Fish!
Chilly afternoon on the D with friends; jigged up a few keeper Eyes and worked up a good appetite for the Speed Boat Bar & Grill in Wyandotte! The fish have started to trickle in from Lake Erie; a warm rain will raise the river temps a few degrees and kick the Walleyes into high gear....
I’ve decided to run a special rate for US Veterans on my boat during the months of April and May, Detroit River and/or Lake Erie walleye jigging this Spring. On any weekday morning or afternoon, I’ll take 3 Vets for 5 hrs of fishing for $225 for the group. I’ll clean your fish, and send you home with a smile! Just give me a call and get your dates reserved.....
Thanks, and thanks for your service!
I'm booking Charters now for Apr/May/Jun on Detroit River and Lake Erie. If you're interested in doing a trip, let me know what you want to fish for and preferred dates.
Keep checking back with me; the Detroit river is now ice free and will be clearing up soon; it's going to be a great year for walleye....
Just finished cleaning fish and sending home my friends with lots of good Walleye fillets! Had a great day with Nicky Walsh and Tom McGlinnen on the Saginaw River, tons of fish in the system now and just enough keepers to keep a fisherman interested......here’s a couple pics of Nicky with his first ever Walleyes! Big smile from a hard-working walleye jigger!
Looking at the wx forecast, I think we are done for a while; maybe the whole Winter! If the pendulum swings back into warming trends mid-month, we’ll be out on the soft water again!
A great day on the Saginaw River (Bay City MI) with Tom Bridges and Dave Baker! We got some good advice from Capt. Dan Boileau about how to hook these big walleyes in the presence of thousands (literally) of small, aggressive males: drag the jig along the bottom and only lift it occasionally a few inches....sounds crazy, but it worked, in spades!! We were the only boat that had these larger fish “dialed in” because of the jiggin technique that Capt. Dan recommended.....
Talk about happy fishermen, neither had ever fished this river and Dave hasn’t fished with me in over 20 years! Both quickly caught on to the technique and started filling the big livewell on the Triton 216 in no time at all. Thank God for a wonderful day, great conditions and fantastic fishing!
Spent most of today enjoying the great conditions, the sunshine, and the insane walleye bite on the Saginaw River (Bay City, MI) with friends Tom, Bruce, and Chris. We handled an estimated 200 fish between 8am and 3pm, 90% of which were undersize and released to grow more! This fishery continues to amaze me with its reproduction the last three years in a row!
The current was almost non-existent, so at times we did more jig dragging than working the bow mount to stay “vert...ical”.
Bruce Lupke caught the biggest fish today, as is usual for Bruce, “better late than never!”
We also heard from other anglers up in that area that Saginaw Bay‘s Walleye trolling bite is very good now, so, the first time the wind looks favorable to head back and wash some DDHJ’s , Bandits, and RR’s, we’ll do it!
Well it's getting to be "that time of the year" when the big girls stack up inside Brest Bay and the brave souls venture forth on the near-ice cold water to tease them into biting! We are taking half and full day charters now for the remainder of this late season until ice up (if and when it comes). Here are a few late season and Winter Eyes taken on my boats the past couple of seasons.....
