Several well-meaning, totally caring individuals have had suggestions about replacing Octopus. They've even taken the time to show love to us by searching the ...Internet for bears that "bear" a resemblance to Octopus! I've politely and simply stated that he really can't be replaced. Let me tell you why he can't, and explain why it's so important that we get this guy back if it's at all possible!

This is Octopus Car-Car Stickers. Naming him is one of my most cherished mommy memories. This particular memory isn't so profound because it was sweet (it was) or because it was a sort of christening of the most loved bear of all time (it was). This memory is such a big deal because of the year the preceded it. Ben had this bear for a full year before he named him. It was not a regular year. It was not a good year. It was not a year a three-year-old should have to deal with. He dealt with it by having Octopus.

During that year Ben's daddy was deployed for three months. Ben's baby brother was sick. He got sicker and sicker and sicker. Ben's mommy spent most of her free time on the computer trying to figure out why his baby brother was wasting away. Ben's mommy was cutting so many foods out of her diet so she could continue nursing the sick baby that she was starving and angry and depressed. She was losing her mind. Ben's dog was taken back to the breeder because his mom was having trouble caring for the dog and the high-needs baby. Ben's baby brother was hospitalized without warning while Ben was at preschool to be started on an NG feeding tube. He had to spend most of the next few days with friends while mommy and daddy took turns at the hospital and learning about their new life... Ben watched countless times as his mom and dad wrapped his baby up in a sheet so mommy could force a tube down his nose while he screamed. Ben always cried and held Octopus. Ben had Octopus. Ben's mommy continued to lose it, but Ben and Octopus were together every day.

The day Ben finally named Octopus I stayed off my computer. I was dying inside, I couldn't find answers and I couldn't find ways to stop losing weight and my life, so I just shut it all down. For the first time in almost a year I sat and really played with Ben. He was a joy, still an absolute pleasure to be with despite the year we'd had. He had so many stories about his bear. I asked why he still didn't have a name and he said he didn't know any. I started listing names. None of them were right so he started throwing out more and more ridiculous ideas and we both laughed and laughed. Finally he said "Octopus!" He happened to be looking at an octopus... I said, "he's not an octopus..". He said, in his cute little four-year-old voice, "no, but his name is Octopus (looking around the room) Car-Car.... Stickers!"
"Octopus Car-Car Stickers?!"
"I'm going to remember that and hold you to it!!"
"Good! I don't wanna forget it..!"

Little J and I went camping at Assateague Island during the Columbus Day weekend. We camped on the beach and saw wild horses! Have you ever been there? What's your favorite place to camp? I loved Assateague, but Shenandoah National Park is still special to me.

Since we moved to the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area several years ago, I’ve wanted to go camping at Assateague Island National Seashore, which is off the Maryland and Virginia coasts. It&…

This cracked me up!

Have you ever thought of what it would be like for a toddler to express their woes and share their triumphs on Facebook in the same way adults do? Well, thanks

Are you camping or grilling this next weekend? What's your favorite food to cook over the fire?

It’s almost Labor Day -a busy camping weekend- so I wanted to share one of my new favorite camping meals. Over Memorial Day weekend, we went camping at our favorite place to travel to and cam…

This is the adorable moment a baby elephant throws a jumbo-sized temper tantrum, but in a classic example of old-fashioned parenting it is ignored by its mother on the African savanna.

Curious about the LuLaRoe craze? Here are my unsponsored opinions:

Note: This is not a sponsored post. I was not compensated for this post, and I am not a LuLaRoe consultant. I just like the clothes! I heard about LuLaRoe in 2014 soon after it launched. A Facebook…

I'm slowly combing through my photos from last year (anyone else take thousands of photos???), and I found our photos from visiting Luray Caverns in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Have you been? They're gorgeous! For a few tips on visiting them, see my blog post:

The Luray Caverns (near Luray, Virginia) were discovered in 1878, and they are a Registered Natural Landmark. The Friday before Labor Day, we visited the Luray Caverns in Virginia. We attempted to go in 2015 (the same weekend), but the caverns were packed. That time, we drove by and saw the overflow...

For a while now, I've been wanting to post about infertility, but I wasn't sure when or how. Sometimes this really sucks, and I wish people talked about infertility more, so I wouldn't feel alone. But maybe me posting about it will help someone else. I have no idea, but here goes...

1. I'm thankful that I have a child and that my infertility is considered secondary. 2. Secondary infertility (the inability to bear a child after you've had one or more) accounts for more than half the cases of infertility in the U.S. 3. Statistically, infertility is just as often caused by an issu...

Have you tried these yet? I'm thinking about giving them a go.

Are you visiting Baltimore any time soon? The Port Discovery Children's Museum is pretty cool!

A few Saturdays ago, we visited the Port Discovery Children's Museum in Baltimore for the first time. It's not the cheapest place to visit. Besides the entrance fee, you have to pay for parking. Ticket prices vary. As of September 2016, general admission costs $14.95 for ages 2 and up, but they have...
