🔥🔥🔥PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS FIRE WEATHER SITUATION TODAY SUNDAY ACROSS SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS
Particularly dangerous fire weather conditions are expected to develop across the entire area today due to high winds, very low relative humidity, and abundant dry fuels. These conditions will be supportive of multiple large, destructive, and potentially life threatening fires, if a fire were to start. BE CAUTIOUS! Avoid ANY activities tomorrow that could create a flame or spark, and if you see smoke or a fire, report it immediately!
Dangerously critical fire weather conditions are expected today through Monday as a strong upper level storm system moves through the southern Rockies and into the plains. Very windy conditions will combine with warm temperatures and consequent low relative humidity and dry fuels to create an environment favorable to fire outbreaks. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for all of Southeast New Mexico and West Texas from Sunday through early Monday evening.
Wind gusts to 85 mph are possible in the Guadalupe Mountains today. Wind gusts exceeding 65 mph are expected in the Davis Mountains. In the plains along and north of I-20, wind gusts to 60 mph are possible. South of I-20, gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible. Localized blowing dust and crosswinds could present some travel challenges.
A High Wind Warning is in effect today for southeast New Mexico, the mountains of west Texas, the Van Horn to Pecos corridor and much of the Permian Basin. West winds will increase to 30 to 50 mph with gusts to 65 mph in the plains and 45 to 65 mph with gusts to 85 in the Guadalupe Mountains.
Here is the current #drought monitor for West TX and SE New Mexico. Rainfall has been scarce since the beginning of this year and has lead to worsening drought conditions area-wide. This will only exacerbate fire danger heading into Spring as fuels remain dry. #txwx #nmw

We will see a prolonged period of fire weather over the next several days. As it stands now, Sunday looks like the worst day with very strong winds and low humidity expected. Outdoor burning is not recommended as any fires that get started will spread quickly! #txwx #nmwx
