do this with players um Golf is one of our most disappointing ones we've had the the year in retrospect for the players and was one that had a lot of hope when that uh I've been kinda start to sending around the holidays never quit and last three months of the year um as a group they felt like they lost coming your way Hey the ability to win close games and um they wanna lot fingers pointed we built this team with tension providing Support for the players that we brought back from keep and come alone um let's Thomas guys we brought back from last year's team to support that Group that we had and you know our calculations were um provide a stronger that starters and we didn't ever really strong bench Yeah our starters never really got the consistency of players we have some injuries here and there the kind of kept them from really getting chemistry chemistry necessary to win win close games um In christ the staff see we're looking forward to this is our beginning button Season this where we start over again we start rebuilding a team and we have put together what we wanna put together as far as collective group love things gonna happen between down July July All this with me collect the roster but it gives a good indication what we wanna do 20 years we have a draft pick so we're looking forward to that of course level coin flip I think Next week to determine what position we actually will and with our balls will be split in half between Minnesota and ourselves so we'll be sharing that but hmm it's a lottery so Whenever there's a lottery there's always a chance to will move up back as we found out a couple years ago um all that being said I never took a jump shot never made the substitution But the buck stops here and you know we have collected a group of young guys are play it really hard and well together I think our fan core can see the group that we would play At the end of the season that we're competitive play basketball the right way defense hard and missing a little bit of talent that great chance to do some good things out there in the court Some nut in a tanking form which they were concerned about a one point which we tell them we're not taking you don't do that and they haven't won some games which is okay with us as we Put a basketball they learn to play together if that was good I don't know if you Have any questions I can imagine why you would have any everything seem so playing the opening most you guys know because I'm sure you got all information need but if I can help you just love something over my Action home him been able to win with him on the court this time and I think that direction With our team is that he is a player that will be better off somewhere else and music is talents we can winter chase Championship right now we need players are really active can play every single play do you Mentally and off instantly that's really important for us we start to get some players on the floor that can do that and you know that's the direction we have to go look good before they The perfect you can make a deal that thank you to that's still to be determined to have a long ways to go on them uh to know soon uh remove it and you will On the spot no we didn't talk about that we just talked about the yellow how how we can make things the best possible things for both of us uh place we can go to be competitive to be back in the And something that would benefit us moving forward is a younger developing team he said that But I wanna know did this there was this page and come out and that didn't happen for another month after our discussions Um all I said was simply this I don't try to change people they are who they are and you know that that something that you know I learned a long time ago mine but what gym doing and I talked about originally Was trying to develop a process of which we were developing players and we had an identity and this is one of the things that bother this issues that we did not have an identity um the identities often times been running to the Sea I had but it's basically about ball movement player movement aggressive play the play every play those type of things that uh create teamwork and I think people appreciate our fans appreciate that we develop the Like as a part of the development of thing we brought up two or three players before players and played in this deal this is all part of what we're trying to do the build an Organization and I think you know people see that we are when we're going With this I mean obviously we don't have a lot of draft picks in the last couple years our drive picking okay Peter not to be pretty good deal we're hoping this drop it will be a players some talent but we understand that a lot of these Our young people that it's gonna take three or four years for their development so in that process and beyond my tenure here which team becomes a vibrant competitive have a Chance for you know maybe the going beyond just being in the play House that's okay with me and you know I think America particularly just to win a Championship but to to do things that you know were directed by my Tions from doing let's have something that represents something was have something that is identifiable is who we are and how we play good there were times here where maybe You could diffuse things in the controlled media talks um and when you came in you said you were going to be open and we're gonna have a relationship why haven't uh also really different told you I No Wells has to talk in this business I mean who else is relegated to talking in front of the press um everybody yeah I agree with that I mean there's some fan things but you Our fans right alright um you know there number of incidents that step in the way of this obviously um and just pay drafts during the three deadline that we make a statement but doesn't happen to the trade deadline so there's nothing to talk about in that particular aspect of there's no definition as far as what was going on and Um that incident that have deal there's no way they define that so you know I just feel like it was right right time for me and my own personal became an issue this year that I had to deal with a mile so there's some also Bit personal things are waiting on them building things that like there was nothing different you are a coach people have to be the one cleaning step away well what was the explanation right there's no it's The nation that really wasn't me you know story that was behind the man that also felt your very definite pulled going home to his family and the situation that have been high energy tension To Asian since August I guess he left us in September but really didn't anticipate was gonna go on in the whole preseason thing when I want him in that just build up to the point where you can win a Wall get back in the Guys we subsequently did what we are gonna do with player misses a game and which is going from here but that was one of the things I thought was a disruptive thing for the team but I think the team won by that it wasn't something that was Particularly with the all the bad we have a good conversation with them today express the fact that he wants to be back We talked about it me going to um rehab and work and whatever yes abilities chosen to go back to Chicago to do that um they will be in La but they also took time out to see you really enjoy playing Even with the losses which course surprises us weekly because he's been on some very successful teens but he said he wants to have a chance to redeem himself as a player and I like that I like who derrick represents as themselves A lawyer drink directed him taking on the big challenge come on okay no Go 11 Wait wait wait that no one of that Wait why there were very possible that are I got I got jargon um and best ball made up a particularly um simple acts Son rocket science um that's rentals we set all time this is the rocket science it's pretty simple you have to be able to handle ball he will stop with the ball you have to be able to pass the basketball yeah people use footwork Really use various aspects of timing and team play um some of our other we've got completely off course here in the idea that a system of basketball particularly one that's been Call the sideline trying which is now just call the trying a lot of it as being impediment to the basketball team this is not an impediment um when they build a system of of anything and You know we can I can take a number of incidents that are like this um in sports whether it's teams that I've coach um belo check uh Seattle seahawks there's an identifying way in which they play and when you develop that system so that people are all on board of the system then you have something that's concrete it's an understandable format that you're working with Inside of developing that is a coach you develop a certain standards and those standards are upheld there's a certain way to play we don't play basketball any other way but this way and so those are the things that are It's not particularly that we run the pinch pose to the blind pig or whatever else is common for an acura that we may use this terminology in the system it's the actions and how you get to that and that your playing team basketball House we're not doing anything different here it's just basketball as it is but somehow or other is got to be resisted format in which um A lot of players don't have their say the skills as you to to play in the system above and requires a skill so we're trying to teach that in our daily in our young players how to have the fundamental skills Plz to do this that make sense continue on for their so as we go through this stuff you fall falls in line and then leadership see me already and you know composing a team becomes the order that goes On behind all of that and if you know that type of thing that you could fit other people inside that style of play the compliment each other so it's no wonder that the spurs can have Um some success continuing their action or you know pictures can have success because they can put people in places or the fact that we could do that all the later situation because we have something that was Talk read and you can have something that you identify some of the skills you bring them in and they can fit in if the characters correct or characters feeling for that group does that make sense to you does like having a workout We face resistance and we base resistance at the top yeah I mean you know we got rid of supplies early on that resisted didn't show that you know that they will Willing to be learners are willing to take into the fact that this is how we wanna play this is what we're gonna do and so you know we have to make some some changes we have a young coach so we made some changes at that time that you You know I just let I like Jeff to anyone to do we have a agreement that he would try to blend is what we call whatever that flow fast break early shoot Advancing the something that was formatted that could be in the game type of stuff so we could have functions at the in the game so they show that they could do that to the end of the season and start being able to do something that Which is important okay yes enough this is very true so very well you know your current reminisces assistant associate head coach To these he has all the knowledge that I have and so they I thought is combo they could fit together pretty well and uh you know that very care the first month you know them to start and blend this in together with something is quite simple You know it was not an easy task and I understand that so we can let it roll until things then roll well until in the February before say looks like we need some more um fundamentals or more Function there towards the end of the game of more skills so I think we should start doing some things that create that no one What can you say yeah losing losing is a tough situation and know that I love Like um the backbone of what we have like the people that are important that are looking at talent they know what they're looking for you can see what we got is tell you see the guys like wine and chasing and Me and willy or gomez and the kids that we're bringing this Organization have a certain sense of how to play in the structure that we wanna play so I think we're moving in that direction is not fast enough sleepy to The day but I think we're gonna get there and I think we keep insisting the type of players we want is gonna be there but behind the scenes in the group that we have um you know my teammate work with Steve Listen jamie mathews and Christian yoga tastic in the people in our scotty I think we know what we want and where it shouldn't developing that and turning away from just see So I can jump out the gym this guy can do a triple double gainer to dunk the ball where that's where instead was the skill players that know how to play together in a team form kind of in a picture is God going for We're gonna roll hmm good yeah Jeff as good basketball mind I think he's um amenable to players uh he's a young coach is only coach to them two and a half seasons is not like he's got a a menu of 10 years of coaching so easy yeah I think he's listens uh yeah we have good communication going back and forth I think there's some disc Times with this team and I think there's something bilious nuts in this team that created some of the discord during the year um and I think that has to stop and then that will stop what you have different come Make sure you could go no I don't think so the one thing about the coaches the kind of Like a current was the most outspoken defensively and we got kinda understand that because I was our biggest need the found seem to be the issue most of the time so you could go to that job mom and in stead of Really the other aspect of it perhaps the office of in it with their average of the hundred 506 points a game that seem to be like okay that's pretty good let's see if against you know straighten out a difference because we can and you know that Surprise like really I thought that you said Joe came uh Shoulder injury shoulder surgery year go missing you know playing 20 some games and last year with this balls you're concerned about 31 he's still relatively young there's a great heart the sky he's not pass And for the game his combination with dirt seem to be a perfect combination of rose and Joe came together because the team well together um defensively he was defensive player of the year almost things seem to jump out at me as a Really good thing you know which we talk a lot about you can you get yourself back into this condition um hamstrings hamstrings has trees eventually it ended up being a need that was creating ultimately other problems So here we hope going forward is express is great dedication towards getting back to what he was what either who he is as a basketball player so I have to trust him in that one up That's okay that's just that's just on that will be lining a Bird cage somewhere whenever writing that stuff is there such things as papers anymore guys um you know It was kind of an informal thing about that there's never like formally Yeah he still coming has been great is who is he just lead score you know it's gonna be Hall of fame entry at some point they 10 15 years down the road Um you always is carry the the basic load for this team you know I thought he stood up well this year and a lot of tough situations I can regret it yeah I can't go back in the group that um obviously it has worked on this partnership together some of our other didn't collect here with this team but you know he's done his his Role play this is real quite well okay different either draft or somewhere along the line and uh free agency um you know derek's express Ft hopes coming back you know we have some options and you know so yeah scoring guard in first and foremost you know organizing leaders stuff that's not particular strength As a score is unparalleled someone told me today that he's still a leading the League of a swing and so it says something about this guys willing to take it in their challenge no We wanna know you didn't you know we have is a trait but we have an agreement when we sat down and wrote a contract about that no treat the book parties phil I was time it was time You said this but you know I just said I just said we have one here you don't wanna end up your career not winning um this is not something that Yo you wanna have label on your career you wanna give to that territory we have chance to win and you know that's we physical not being to stand up to all games physically Kelly standing back etcetera you actually was looking building before starting over said um can we assume Dr with last summer and glass assign veteran with now guys look at this as a back to exactly process because I think you can do both I think you both together we obviously have three draft six right so we're gonna bring in some young players um end we obviously have money for a contractual no situation in free agency so we like to to do a little bit of both in this Uh we like to have a team it's competitive by that this team's competitive but they could win so very unique situation on the games on steam lost in the last 23 minutes last shots even you love you the awesome what happened I try not to think about that at all and I'm not don't wanna comment who just got to that's Was it something different um well you know that's all about being now is your That stuff is just brings in a safe deposit box you know it doesn't hold any weight right now for me I mean you know hmm um mother for my children call up and said you know how excited we were at this time of the year to be Going in to play us was it feel like for you so it feels like a long summer that's what it feels like but we get work done this summer we can do some things that I think it's gonna improve this team so that's we have to look at it it's about this job is it the Steve uh jamie mathews Steve bills you do a lot of the paperwork to the the back and forth um headquarters and my my issues is about to uh talking the coaches find out the game plan and I think that you know I kinda left them alone to see how they What's during the holidays when I think things really kinda fell down over new year's and subsequent week after new years and a six loss in a row right there which changes us from being positive to remind us that we You so I think that's where you know I gotta do more hmm on seen on target mentoring suck 14 um I don't know this clinic is just a little demonstration of how simple your entrances you there seem to be a hmm this connected Derrick rose that you know all you did was so the bottom of the corner stand I just want to show him in half an hour the variety of things that you can do that we're really creative not simple really creative things No here no I think I disagree have 90 percent of the top when I'm in the look And with the coaches and we're in the film station and talking about the game is about defense there they really focusing on the defense and end one of the things that often does do is it creates a situation where you can defend out of it But that doesn't help screen roll off it's which is happening now that's most of controls transition defense which we used to think was the most important thing in basketball as you transition defense now it's about how can you control screen role well In the latest manda giant step towards allowing guards to have freedom be guys or even using their hands on screening at the top of the key is a whole disregard for the referees to call that is on file of all the Not the same on the base line when the guy is screaming I think they really want the guards to be out there the westbrook art the Thomas curries etc that's been the direction of change in the leap and I think it's on point and that has to be your Defense of that has to be everything about what you doing defense we do you switch you have guys are capable of switching do you have a shot blockers that gonna be good enough to do it are you thinking you all these combinations are what cost us the ability this So set up a really good effort about defense and I think that something guys came with preconceived ideas of how they wanted to play the fans but then physically they were unable to play defense and the format that they want so that became Pushing shoving pushing Paul I should say between the coaches and the players at some point they were frustrated the players can execute what they want to execute so it became really a focus with this team was what about our defense Well it's on ball defense use ronnie Baker get up there and get in People's bodies and get people over and get in front of guys and it's not gonna happen every time he changed how we play a mean that's just as simple as that you know we have someone who is willing to fight and fight in the bodies and over screens um In my process of looking at people for this team we're gonna look at that type of defense I've also recommended full court pressures as it alternative because I think that that's gotta be something you consider if your coach Um I used it over the years I think it's valid to to take people out of their places that they wanna start their office from making after work James o'clock to 20 47 o'clock so we're considering some of that stuff and we talk about Players have different coach motivation kind things and the things you say don't reach five same way out here in the front office have you found it difficult for you to keep the temperature the guys or or anything Push the right buttons from a different role now where you're no I don't know if I can claim that and um yeah you know I guess the coaches are always in front of the press always other teams of some of the from Mike for telling With some kind of figure like five thousand times in front of the team talking to a team if you're a coach in Norman time you know you toned year caustic March complements all those things are so guild and Live it you know the temperature the team and the win loss record you know when you sit back in the position I met I get on the court couple times I've had to stop practice and say homeless what we can play that way you just to emphasize what the coaches They're trying to say because there's a point in which you have to be there with the players and actually stop them so you know I try to do some of that but not intruding the coaches yo direction but I think that that is some It has to be done because as I said hmm few times we have to know who we are and what we stand for and how we gonna play and that has to keep continually be offered is a idea that goal this is who we are so If I have to do that from different forms or places and I try to do that but I have been very good between telling giving up that you please credit for someone's waiting for the good On site training with the practice that we recommended hundred probably I probably will I don't like that um if the point is the point was ballot you know I have coaches that I love the liberty to do that if they saw something on the sideline and they felt like goes by past and had the emphasize so I think that's being open candy so I would hope that a coach would be uh fourth right could be able hands on like that but What could be wow well that's a long way down the road but there are very few options you know what that level you know but their options so The one playing hard like we play the last 56 games Okay guys get up in the people playing hard pick up full court of times in a ball movement activity instead of standing those type of things that's what we're gonna see more of what is that they are Yeah you know I think what we had scores allowing the floor of the derick Bell yeah keep it their scores they're meant mindset is about when do I get a shot when you was one My turn and the kind of feast of scoring has to other games going and I think that that something we can have the best you just have to play scoring comes its comes if it's not you know you get the for a shot or you You know the position and you put up shots of bad shot that's gonna change how the team plays is gonna be a little bit taken back by guys don't get shots then the cam in their head defenses where you have to make your market that's best I think we have to go forward with your breath last summer trying to we come over basically me when no you know me think I can't go back and regret that it is a good opportunity work yeah We have stuff that happen we couldn't done for that's just what happened in yellow and that's not all are Down this guy place 34 minutes a game it's a big hole to fill no we want a significant player that deal Good hopefully fill that that role but that's that's still me that's a long we'll be marking form not I mean you've got team is going plants that could be eliminated right away and say that's good enough we're not good enough you know we gotta go somewhere else and um I think about it the best 20 19 You like the field the other the season in June everyone those home and happy I mean if you're happy by losing the final probably you got your head screwed on the wrong way because you go to the conference and you in the conference you feeling Good about yourself that's when the worst things that can happen is to lose in the final you lose in the first round well then workout we got change the people in our team you know so there may be some you know quick outs may change some People's minds as to what they're gonna do um here we have with the you know teams that were instilled in making the chase um something is called the word amenable to Uh mel and his group with something is called the word but we're willing to give up core group members of their team which is understandable but that type of you so he said no you that's the we're not gonna make that when you save me a little No he told you while just a little that yeah we indication of some things I just not divulge that with you you're okay yeah Yeah you're pretty anything off the table if it's a Christmas is uncomfortable baby with everything everything everything is gonna be possible and we have to make sure that People have something to say we listen to it we have examining shit I think I think our fans have seen a Those it's not in the win loss column I think the progress of our you know what we're looking for and who put in place to have a chance to play another pony I think that's kinda evident It's one losses for sure because I could look at the one last record and say well you know not in the playoffs I'm you know when I was coaching in Chicago and they made the decision to go drop On from winning six championships and whatever dime years or eight years or whatever it was you know that ownership said the worst place to be is to be 6785678 and in another class and not drafting Hi drafts and getting quality players you might have to just start over they started over again I'm use goes that 99 let's get close to 20 years right they under the final In the conference but not to the finals in the link so take it's a hard process putting people teams together and you have to be pretty sure that that's the way you wanna go in building I mean look at all the people of personal they've been able to go through Matt process we're trying to do it was still some players like the gar talented when we have a board and we look to our board related our players we felt like we have No doesn't players that we're still very confident and support to be a part of a team so I feel pretty good about that now someone for free agents but still in all know that's up to them sometimes to make an offer to the The what What's the treatment what treatment are you talking about by about I've never I've never criticize come on ever precise paddle that's all All supposition by papers and whatever speculation my opinionated people holy balls cruises that's what he does as pure fat which is a Person person gonna be able to take that of the coach but also can be part of this Organization that's that's simply matter of fact if you're a basketball player be able to be coach we think the doing of stopping ready to What up this is something I don't miss that surprised through the showing of progress I thought he took shots that were good chance you have a game and then take a three to that was that was Important was not there you don't have to take a three sometimes just a cheap way to score points you know are you get anxious to score point um shorter delivery on the shop he learned some post up things that were good yeah I think Some things that are really positive about keep his here when you see progress uh the stuff the over leaving players to different so if you re a k You gotta change no we're haven't have a happy problem oh I think that in the way you want to play and this is Simple matter of um young talent this year we need to get 10 more talented as a basketball team leavitt think we got more talented is a basketball team I think we got talented players of play team basketball they want to move The basketball play in the certain team for format it was good so I think
