Official statement on Nanak Shah Fakir film withdrawal:

"It is with great regret that I would like to inform audiences that we are temporarily withdrawing the film Nanak Shah Fakir from cinemas worldwide. For all those who have watched the film and come out to support, a massive heartfelt thank you and for those who have opposed it, we apologise if through our film, which was only made to show the world the beautiful teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, we've upset you.

Let me tak...e this opportunity to reconfirm that we have shown our beloved Guru with utmost respect by depiction only through computer graphics, amidst a ray of light and from the back.

As this project has been made with a lot of passion and hard work and only with the intention of spreading Sikhi to the world, we will be working closely with the Akal Takht Sahib and SGPC to reach a resolution."

"The film succeeds in maintaining its piousness throughout with excellent background score, meaningful lyrics and sleek editing.
It strikes a perfect balance between the Guru's personal life and his philosophy."

The film's cinematography is gorgeous, and many of the performances are very real.

"The team deserves credit for pulling off a 140+ minute saga with only glowing back and faceless side profiles of the Guru to work with. They deserve credit for working within a million constraints to create a well-photographed film that assigns perfectly acceptable imagery to the Guru's phases-His birth in Talwandi, work in Sultanpur, and 25-year Udasis (travels) in all four directions."

"A moving picture for the diehard faithful as well as others, it has nothing objectionable or against Sikhism. The cast and crew deserve a pat on the back for pulling off a two-and-a-half-hour film depicting Guru Nanak through computer graphics. Despite censorship issues and the limited framework in which they had to work on the biopic, the output is a well-packaged film with impressive performances."

In a country awash with bans and closed mindsets, making a religious film is a challenge in itself. Before one knows it, there are too many rules, too many perspectives on religion to let the visual medium depict history with a creative licence.

"I met a Tamilian couple at the theatre who knew nothing about Guru Nanak but fell in love with his story. So I guess it’s not just a dream come true for those who’ve grown up listening to tales of Nanak but is also a story which was worth narrating and definitely worth watching. I, for one, have had an extremely humbling experience."
