I would classify these "walking simulators" as interactive digital narratives

We talk to developers from Variable State, Fullbright, Chinese Room, and Campo Santo about the past and future of the walking sim genre. For starters, what do they think of the phrase "walking sim?"

"The MFA in Game Design is for creative visionaries intent on producing socially, culturally, and emotionally substantial interactive experiences. On the cutting edge of art game design and the design of games with a purpose, the degree prepares students to advance the frontier of games by exploring emerging theories and applying them to practice. The games students create throughout their degree will be engaged and challenged in critiques with faculty and peers, juried shows, and community events. Graduates of the program will be equipped to define and realize their authentic, thriving professional lives."

What Games Can Be.

The School of Design at DePaul University is launching a new MFA in Game Design in Fall 2017 and is accepting applications until March 1st.

T...he MFA in Game Design is for creative visionaries intent on producing socially, culturally, and emotionally substantial interactive experiences. On the cutting edge of art game design and the design of games with a purpose, the degree prepares students to advance the frontier of games by exploring emerging theories and applying them to practice. The games students create throughout their degree will be engaged and challenged in critiques with faculty and peers, juried shows, and community events. Graduates of the program will be equipped to define and realize their authentic, thriving professional lives. The MFA is also a terminal degree that opens opportunities to teach at the university level and enter an academic tenure-track career.

The MFA in Game Design is housed the School of Design, which offers a rich community of degree programs in Graphic Design, Interactive and Social Media, Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-Centered Design and Digital Communication and Media Arts. It also benefits from collaborative opportunities with the undergraduate and graduate game programming degrees in the College of Computing and Digital Media whose students work side-by-side with designers and artists to build games. And, located in the heart of Chicago, DePaul students are immersed in the city's vibrant cultural scene.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply. The MFA in Game Design is geared to get students up to speed quickly who are coming from a range of disciplines including professional game development, artistic practice, humanities and sciences. Previous experience in game design is not required if the applicant demonstrates a professional level of practice in another field that can provide skills or knowledge that can inform and enrich their work in games.

"Sunset’s flawed narrative is essential to its function as a gallery game, since it creates the conditions for the ebb and flow of the artworks within the sculpted gallery-space it provides."

"The game follows the same rules as the Atari arcade classic but takes away some of the mechanics. For starters, the bat is immovable and the ball isn’t perpetually bouncing around. But what you can do in this version of the game is move the window the game sits in."

"As many have pointed out, our 'tailored stories' don’t have endless branching. Each individual play through shares many plot points and events with different play throughs. There is more shared content than branched content. But still, they somehow feel very different and personal despite this. That’s not by accident, that’s our intent."

"The quest for the center of the universe, for the end-game of No Man's Sky's story, was far less interesting than the small, quiet, private stories that lived over every hill and horizon on every new world I discovered."

NPR has started a new series called Reading The Game, in which they take a literary lens to video games. First on the list? No Man's Sky.

Some of the best, wildest, most moving storytelling right now isn't on TV or in movies — it's in video games. So we're taking a literary look at one of this year's hottest games, No Man's Sky.
