Forgotten race rings a bell
The Kaffir community recently became a topic in Parliament when questions were raised about their status in Sri Lankan society by MP Buddhika Pathirana. Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister Nimal Lansa assured that steps have been taken to ensure that the Kaffir community is given equal rights as other Sri Lanka citizens. Minister Lansa further said that members of this community were given all rights while their culture had also been recognized as one that should be preserved.
Thirty five Kaffir families live in Puttalam now while a few members live in the Galle and Hambantota district as well. Referred to as Kaffirs or Kapiri in Sinhala, their origin is in Mozambique with an Afro-Portuguese heritage. The community of friendly people with ready smiles, distinctive curly hair and African facial features greeted Nation journalist Dimuthu Attanayake and photojournalist Mushtaq Thasleem recently when they visited a Kaffir community in Sirambadiya, Puttalam.

A Sri Lankan national in the United States has turned the tables on a group of thieves who tried to rob the gas station he work in.
Mayura Dissanyake works at a Fuel Depot, but he's also a semi-professional mixed martial arts fighter.
He was behind the counter when he noticed his co-worker returning to the store after a run to the bank.
Dissanyake saw two men jump out of an SUV and attack his co-worker. They were trying to grab the bank bag he was carrying.
