It's far from all over for the Great Northern Railway north of Armidale. The petition run by Passenger Trains North of Armidale is well supported and the push to save this railway and reopen it is gathering steam!

The controversial issue has divided the community.

This morning at Armidale, New England Railway members fired up our 620 class power car, 635, and both No.1 and No.2 Cummins diesel engines roared into life. Hearing this power car idling away is very inspiring.

For a short video of the engines idling, see:

New England Railway continues to work toward an amendment to our accreditation to allow us to commence short runs of 620 set, 635/765, on our siding and in Armidale Yard.

We encourage our supporters to become financial members of the organisation and assist us move toward our ultimate objective of operating heritage and tourist services in the New England area. Yesterday (19 January 2014) representatives of New England Railway (NER) met with officers of the Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) who were conducting a scheduled Rail Safety Compliance Inspection. The meeting and inspection went well and our accreditation as a 'Rolling Stock Operator', to facilitate the restoration of our rolling stock, remains valid with further work to be conducted by NER on:
- Transitioning and evolving our governance model; and
- Continuing refinement of our Safety Management System.

We wish all of our supporters the very best for Christmas and for a prosperous year in 2015. We hope to relay some very good news early next year in regard to our reinvigorated effort and plans to operate heritage train services.

Some very welcome news!

The Member for Northern Tablelands says a rail trail from Black Mountain to Ben Lomond is now likely to be built alongside the existing disused rail line.

Save the Great Northern Rail line Group

We have accrued 500 signatures on our petition to save the Great Northern Railway! Well done to everyone who has signed and a very big thank you!

This is an ama...zing development, in just under two months we have caught and overtaken the counter petition which was hosted by the rail trail advocates and that is despite their petition having near a three month head start on ours!

Our petition will remain online and, as always, we invite signatures from any of our supporters who have not yet signed. Thank you.…/save-the-great-northern-railway…
