When Emma Thompson's lovely Sense and Sensibility came out on video, my mother chose it at the rental store. I'd never read Jane Austen, but she insisted on seeing it. I remember sitting down, not knowing what I was going to be watching, when the movie started. Not long in, my mother's little giggles were enough to keep me entertained if the movie didn't. After their previous lodgings were discovered, George Wickham and Lydia Bennet appealed to the protective wing of the army for better accommodations and a modest quantity of coin. Wickham has been tasked by his superiors to make himself visible to those trying to hunt him, drawing the villains out in the open, but that sort of thing requires a bit of style. Did you know that Jane Austen's ideas of romance were radical at the time? Yet today, we see her influence everywhere. She has almost defined our ideals of romance, even for people who have scarcely heard her name. Have you spotted her at a coffee shop or a movie theater near you? This last Christmas, I was happily bundled up with my family-- working on an "adult" coloring book, if you must know (because I am artistically challenged, so someone needs to draw the lines for me). This little Christmas vignette was posted last year during the blog tour for The Courtship of Edward Gardiner, and I dust it off, now as most of the world is retiring to bed after a month of overindulgence in sweet stories and sugar plums. We still have seven hours before Christmas is over, so if you can handle just one more round of egg nog and peppermint candy, enjoy! [ 1,656 more word ]

All is safe and comfortable for our couple in the home of Mrs Younge... or is it? George Wickham is still running from something mysterious, and even a couple of days in hiding, recovering from his wounds and being nursed by the tender Lydia, are not enough to guarantee that he will not be found. Sounds like a recipe for a bumpy morning, does it not? [ 2,576 more words ]
