Massachusetts has declared a State of Emergency in order to better deal with COVID-19, joining 11 other states to do so. Here are some basic updates but please reach out if you have other questions.
WHY DO WE NEED A STATE OF EMERGENCY?
- It allows for expedited response efforts in ways that don’t circumvent constitutional protections.
- It allows the Department of Health and Human Services to suspend or modify some laws if necessary, like parts of the HIPAA privacy rule or l...aws requiring that medications only be given out in health care facilities.
- It allows the state to require people to isolate or quarantine, school or event shutdowns, and curfews.
- States could let medical professionals who are licensed in other places practice there or allow health care volunteers to handle low-level medical tasks under the supervision of a doctor.
HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE STATE HOUSE?
- The State House will remain open to the public for the time being.
- Meetings with constituents, stakeholders and public officials in the State House will be conducted at the discretion of the Representative. We do ask that if you are feeling unwell, please cancel.
- However, the House of Representatives will be cancelling all public events for the foreseeable future. A reassessment will be done on April 9, 2020.
REMEMBER: If you have only cold symptoms or a low grade fever, call your health care provider. Do not go to the Emergency Department and do not go to your provider’s office or a walk-in urgent care clinic.
