The Sun Sentinel explores the debate over whether the newsworthiness of videos such as the one released of the Parkland perpetrator, outweighs the harm they may cause. #nonotoriety

Images of the Stoneman Douglas shooter leering at his own cell phone camera as he announced he’d “be the next school shooter of 2018” were released by the state attorney’s office Wednesday, and their publication in the media set off a debate over their newsworthiness.

The video manifesto of the #Parkland perpetrator was just released - essentially giving this coward exactly what he wanted. Rewarding mass murderers with fame is a threat to public safety and downright wrong.

If you agree, make your voice heard NOW. Use hashtag #NoNotoriety in response to every news outlet and journalist sharing this killer's video or photo.

In recent days the #NoNotoriety hashtag has, unfortunately, been used for political agenda. To clarify, since it's inception on July 21, 2012, No Notoriety has been and continues to be a non-political movement solely advocating for public safety.

The No Notoriety protocol was drafted with intentional respect for the First Amendment. We believe responsible reporting for the sake of public safety does not require censorship only reasonable care.

Just as the media has taken th...e voluntary steps to not publish names/photos of juveniles and victims of sexual assault and suicide, the No Notoriety protocol urges the media to adopt a similar voluntary, do-no-harm restriction to limit the gratuitous use of the name and photo of individuals who commit rampage acts of mass violence, hence diminishing a proven contagion/copycat effect associated with extensive media coverage and media-induced fame. Instead, we ask that media shifts its focus to the fallen, wounded, survivors and heroes.

Sincerely,
Tom and Caren Teves, Founders No Notoriety

Honor our fallen. Our wounded. Our survivors. Our heroes. Focus on the victims, NOT their killer.

Stop the contagion effect. Adopt a #NoNotoriety policy and send a strong message to wanna-be copycat mass killers, "You will not receive fame in this way anymore!"

Here is yet another reminder of why No Notoriety is so important. From the perpetrator directly: he wanted his story told. With every share of his name and his photo, the media are giving him the very fame and notoriety he wants.

Keep in mind, however, that the perpetrator is not the only consideration. Somewhere in this country is another disgruntled student with a grievance who also seeks attention. When they see how much attention today’s perpetrator receives, they may be... more inclined to commit a similarly public act in belief they too will get fame and notoriety. We must break the cycle.

Help us hold the media accountable.

"On the car radio this morning, there it was again: The reporter said the man in Toronto was a fan of the mass killer in Santa Barbara, Calif., who summed it up this way: “Infamy is better than total obscurity.”

So I ask my fellow journalists: When the killers themselves are telling us they draw inspiration from the prospect of our coverage, why do we continue to say their names and show their pictures? Nothing is ever learned by doing this. No explanation requites the deadly facts. If nothing’s gained, what could be our motive — especially knowing that we might be supplying theirs?"

Repeatedly showing murderers’ faces and names in the media only inspires new ones.
