I was asked to provide audio files. Facebook doesn't have a way to upload audio unless it is in a video. Here is a link to CD Baby where you can hear some samples. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/solgard

I remember when this video was first made, maybe in the 1980s? https://youtu.be/MioFWmrdRVE

This photo was found in my grandparents' attic years ago. Was this my great-grandpa Sveinung Svalastoga and his brother Aslak, or his nephew Sveinung Aslak Olsnes? The story goes that my great-grandpa had been a champion skier and was among the Telemark boys who skied for the King of Norway back in the 1870s or 80s (which would have actually been the King of Sweden who ruled Norway). He had his skiing medals in his sod house in North Dakota which burned down when they were trying to smoke out mosquitoes. So they say.

Nisse in the Barn

No automatic alt text available.
Ruth Marie updated her cover photo.

This is a traditional Norwegian fjøsnisse. A nisse is not quite an elf, nor a gnome. Definitely NOT a troll. They are small creatures. Each farm has a "fjøsniss...e" - a barn elf - who lives on the farm and helps to care for the animals: horses, cats, birds, sheep, goats. They are also mischievous and will make much trouble for you if you don't respect them. In modern day, these are the creatures responsible for moving your car keys or stealing a sock from the dryer. On Christmas Eve, you should leave a bowl of hot porridge in the barn for your fjøsnisse. My mother told me that on the following Christmas morning, the porridge is always gone. And the cat looks very happy and satisfied.

I performed at the Gulf Coast Vikings Sons of Norway Lodge at the Plantation at Sommerset for their Jultrefest last night.

Somehow I didn't get the photos in that last post from my visit in April 2005. Old St Olaf's Lutheran Church, near Cranfills Gap. Texas. The photos of my performance are from the Scandinavian music festival in Austin, Texas.

I just came across some photos from my performances in Cranfills Gap, Texas, and Austin, Texas, in April 2005. Betty Tindall was the main organizer. She and her fellow Norwegians in NE Texas preserve the Old Rock Church and the Ringness House Museum. http://www.next1000.com/family/EC/scand.TX.html

I remember meeting John Vraa when I performed in Climax, Minnesota. He asked me if I knew of the recording of Casey's Old Time Waltz.

CLIMAX, Minn. — He isn't sure exactly when it started, but John Vraa says it seems he's been collecting curious things for a lifetime. He started out small. First, it probably was interesting rocks. Then later, tools and books that once belonged to his great-grandfather's brother who shared his nam.....

One of my favorite tracks from this CD "Norse Fiddle at Home." Dave Berg is a bass player I knew from college and we were in orchestras together in the Twin Cities after that. I moved on to play Hardanger fiddle and Dave is probably still gigging in Minnesota. When I wanted to record this Bach Musette, I asked him to come into Wild Sound Studio to improvise a bassline. Several takes and each one was a bit different. This one here I found so moving that I even wrote the music out so he would do it the same for later performances. That was never to happen as Dave just continued to improvise something new each time. I felt that he could never improve what we caught here. Sorry Dave.

Norse Fiddle shared their post.

Looking for solace and to send some encouragement today. I'm wearing black and wearing my Sætergjenta pendant given to me by my aunt Diane Garber. The Sætergjenta is the herding girl who uses her long rams horn to call down to the valley below, either "all is well," or a call of distress.

Sending love out today. Sung with me by Tora Myer. Recorded at Wild Sound in Minneapolis by Matthew Zimmerman in 2005.
