Yesterday morning I joined UCU members taking industrial action at the University of Keele. I fully support the staff of Keele University who are taking part in... industrial action over the next 4 weeks. The proposed changes from Universities UK to pensions will leave thousands of staff in an insecure position upon retirement and no longer able to access the pension they deserve. UCU members voted overwhelmingly in support this action, showing the united force behind these strikes and genuine concern members share about the USS pension scheme changes.
UCU members at Keele work hard to provide top quality educational experiences in North Staffordshire, and produce world leading research; I am proud to represent an area with such high academic achievements. These staff deserve a fair pension that is reflective of their work and contributions to our community and the wider intellectual community.
I, and I am sure the staff, appreciate the disruption these strikes will cause, but these unprecedented circumstances would result in a far graver situation for those involved if immediate action is not taken. I hope that negotiations can continue between employers and staff to find an amicable solution, and I encourage the use of ACAS as a mediator to try and end the dispute. However until a resolution is found, I offer my support and solidarity to the UCU members during this time of industrial action.
Huge thanks to Bob Allen for coming to tell us about the London Recruits tonight. It is so important for stories of struggles such as this to be documented and discussed.
Great to see our TUCJCC rep Jane Nellist as well.
Thank you to everyone for turning out on a horrible cold rainy night....
Looking forward to the film!
UCU upcoming strike action
This is not an isolated case- so many teachers now feel trapped because of an ever increasing workload. Schools, and I mean management and Governors, have a le...gal duty to ensure the work/life balance of their staff. It does not have to be like this, it should not be like this. NO to excessive workload, YES to a job that rewards you properly and doesn't make you ill!
Unions supporting workers
Despite atrocious weather conditions a spirited demonstration. The strike rally heard speakers from Unite, GMB, Fire Brigades Union, Midlands TUC, PCS, NUT, and... UNISON West Midlands, City of Wolverhampton Branch, Manchester Community Health Branch. Our own Deputy Branch Secretary Tracey Mooney and a Homecare striker also spoke.
