Walk with the Docs is adding years to lives

Walking has many benefits, not the least of which is adding years to your life. A year after starting t...he Walk with the Docs initiative, we reflect on what we have accomplished since stepping out on our first walk on March 29, 2017.
The walking group, made up of Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clinics providers, employees, patients and community members, has had 113 participants and logged 600+ hours of walking! We started walking around the track at the high school on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. and a few months later added Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30 a.m. across Dworshak Dam.
Walker Julie Jackson remarks on, “how nice it is, and lovely scenery!” We made it through four seasons of providing a safe, flat place for community members to be active, and plan for many more.
The World Health Organization recommends 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. Brisk walking counts as moderate physical activity and you can get most of your quota from joining us for our two walks a week. There is also data from the National Cancer Institute Cohort Consortium suggests that brisk walking for 75 minutes per week can add 1.8 years to your life, and, if you can get to 450 minutes a week, you can add 4.5 years to your life!
Weight-bearing activity also improves bone health, and Bonnie Mathews commented on how her bone density scan improved 2.9% from her healthy walking habit, and professed that walking “makes me feel energized, give it a try!”
Each walk is hosted by at least one of the providers from Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clinics and we always have a brief topic of education prior to the walk. We have walkers of all ages, sizes, and abilities that join in. You can walk with an assistive device, and strollers are welcome, but only humans allowed at our venues. We are committed to increasing access to safe physical activity in our community and look forward to adding more years to your life, so in the words of walker Diana Bishop, “Come along with me!”
Thank you to the OJSHS administration for allowing us to use the track and to the custodial staff for turning on the lights for us as the daytime hours diminished. Thank you to the US Army Corps of Engineers for allowing us to walk across the Dworshak Dam and the staff and volunteers who walk with us on Friday mornings.
