Mrs Elvira Raven was well known for her community-mindedness and opening her home, the future Historic Overlook House, to the neighborhood children for ice cream... afterall, the Ravens business was a creamery! In her honor, join us for a beloved tradition, the Overlook neighborhood Ice Cream Social. Sunday, August 7, from 6 to 8 pm will be a delicious gathering of neighbors enjoying frozen treats and usually a prize drawing. See you there for the sweetest, most friendly summer event we know!

We have rescheduled the meeting for Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 at the Kaiser Town Hall (3704 N Interstate Ave.). We will include a revised agenda with the weekly update this weekend.

Stay safe and stay warm out there.

RESCHEDULED FROM FEB 20.

Meet your neighbors at the monthly Overlook Neighborhood Association General Meeting.

This month we'll hear about development proposals for the neighborhood, including a five-story micro-apartment building with 61 units and no parking. We'll also discuss whether the neighborhood should apply for a pilot street parking permit program.

Dual language immersion education provides social, cognitive and academic benefits to children and prepares them to be successful in a competitive, global society. Portland Public Schools offers free programs in five languages: Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian and Vietnamese. Our own Overlook neighborhood school, Beach Elementary, houses the Spanish program.

The lottery period for fall kindergartners to enroll in a dual language immersion program opened on Wednesday and ...continues through March 2. Late entry for students in grades 1-12 is by petition. Apply and learn more on the official website.

While Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin programs often have long wait lists, the Vietnamese program is newer and therefore has more opportunity for enrollment. It will be housed at Rose City Park in NE Portland next year. Native and non-native Vietnamese families looking for a challenging, engaging and highly beneficial language and social program should apply.

An Overlook family with a kindergartener in the Vietnamese program this year is happy to answer questions about it and is available to form study groups, act as carpool partners and provide general support for families interested. Please contact Sarah Tran (st.tran@gmail.com) if you'd like to discuss the Vietnamese program with an Overlook family.

Do icy or snowy sidewalks impair your ability to get around town? Share YOUR story of navigating Portland's Ice and Snow

As the winter weather approaches, the Disability Program is partnering with the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) to encourage community members and businesses to clear their icy and snowy pathways. To do this, we’re asking for community members who would be willing to share their stories on how lingering snow and ice impact the accessibility, livabi...lity, and safety of Winter Portland.

We hope to share these stories as part of PBOT’s Winter Weather Tips and other winter-weather features.

If you’d like to share your story, please contact Joanne at joanne.johnson@portlandoregon.gov or 503-823-9970.

All Portlanders need to understand the vital role everyone has in creating a safe, accessible and mobile Portland this Winter. If you’d like to be part of moving Portland beyond “It Will Melt” and change the way Portland handles snow and ice, please get in touch!
