Occupy Murdoch

We, Occupy Murdoch, emphatically reject and challenge the corporate media system. Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, with its beginnings here in Adelaide, epitomise...s corporate control and what we aim to change through direct action.
The media, when independent, diverse and democratic, is a vital element of any society, for it disseminates knowledge and educates the people. Contrasting, a monopolised and centralised media narrows world views, suffocates understanding, and becomes a dangerous instrument of propaganda and control.
Murdoch’s media is a powerful propaganda arm of corporate-led capitalism, neo-liberalism. His newspapers and TV outlets distort, filter and concoct ‘news’ to advance this agenda – endorsing imperialist resource wars, undermining the valid case for action against climate change, provoking discrimination against Aboriginal people, promoting limitless resource extraction, and attacking anyone or anything that threatens to challenge the corporate agenda.
Authentic democracy cannot exist where such disinformation is touted as truth.
Australia is a uniquely captive audience to Murdoch’s media influence. His News Corporation holds a near media monopoly, the most concentrated ownership in the world. News Corp controls large shares in Sky Network (44%), FOXTEL (25%), and 70% of the capital city press as well as the only national newspaper, the Australian. In Adelaide, The Advertiser, Sunday Mail, and Messenger Newspapers are all Murdoch owned.
John Pilger summed it up well in the New Statesman recently, “Australia is the world's first murdochracy, in which smear by media is power.”
Now, Murdoch is under pressure due to illegal and unethical “news” gathering tactics becoming public in the recent phone hacking scandal in the UK and News Corp’s shares dropped and officials have been arrested as a result. It is a vital moment, an opening, to expose the media’s deeper crimes of complicity in war, Aboriginal land grabs, and so much more.
We cannot let this moment pass, for even in the face of pressure Murdoch is moving to consolidate his holdings further in Australia and around the world. We should take this opportunity to build independent media as an alternative to this corporate hegemony.
South Australia holds a significant place in history for the Murdoch Empire. Here in Adelaide is where it all began when Murdoch inherited his father’s afternoon tabloid, The News.
Here, in Adelaide, is where we will take it back.
Direct Action.
Sincerely, OM
*Promoting 100% non-violent direct action
