Thanks to everyone’s generous contributions, I am happy to report that Alexa and her refugee family are all settled in to their new home and already starting to carve out their tiny slice of the American Dream!

She’s quickly learning English (which she is proud to show off), loves going to the beach to look at the large boats, and is enjoying her new life in a safe, prosperous country full of generous Americans who have welcomed her and her family with open arms. Little by little, love is overcoming hate.

I can’t thank you all enough!

To all the conservative white folks who have messaged me privately, commented on my post from last night, and even researched me on google to make sure that my story “checks out”:

Thank you for your concern. Yes, I am a first generation Mexican-American born to a family of low-means who graduated from Cornell University and the European School of Management. Yes, I did scrub toilets to make ends meet while I got Occupy Democrats off the ground.

Yes, I know it’s hard for y’all to fathom... I even managed to own a crappy laptop, which I used to work while I did my cleanings.

I’m not even going to get into how hard I struggled, nor how fortunate I got, on my path down that long and winding road to where I am today.

This may surprise you, but not everyone who goes to a good school is rich and white, and not every person of color who “made it” sold drugs or played a professional sport.

There is black and brown excellence all around you... and there is no need to be so suspicious.

Remember the guy in this photo? He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard Law School, worked as a community organizer, and then ran for president. Before that, he wrote a book that I read during a time in my life in which i had no direction, no opportunity, and no hope for a professional career — nevermind a higher purpose.

He inspired me to turn my life around and dedicate myself to public service.

He taught me lessons that I would validate through my own personal experiences later in life.

But most importantly, seeing white conservatives question his grades, and even how he managed to get into Harvard Law School, nevermind graduate at the top of his class, taught me the most valuable lesson of all:

No matter how hard a person of color in America works to achieve success, he or she will always be eyed with suspicion by many white conservatives who are unaccustomed to seeing non-whites rise to positions of power and/or influence.

But I have news for you. Our first Black President isn’t the first person of color to make it past the myriad of obstacles that America’s entrenched institutional racism placed in their way, and he certainly won’t be the last.

In fact, black and brown excellence is working hard, playing by the rules, and shattering glass ceilings all around you — so you may as well get used to it.

Soon, America will finally become the truly multicultural melting pot it was ALWAYS destined to be.

Until then, I recommend that you acknowledge your own privilege, count your lucky stars, and keep your snide “concerns” to yourselves.
