One Woman Effect

Even in the darkest of times, this is true. A couple of years ago, I... almost lost my brother. Standing by his bedside, holding his hand while machines were breathing him, life became very simple. All we could do is love. This man I used to argue and fight with became my sole focus. Beauty was everywhere, unimaginable beauty in the midst of a nightmare. My parents became friends after 20+ years of not speaking to each other. My brother is schooling us on what we’re capable of as he fights to walk again. For 9 months in the ICU, nurses had to work around the giant crew of friends who circled his bed day in and day out. The hospital staff said they’d never seen anything like it. And ... I got my brother back. We didn’t have a very good relationship before and while I would have done anything to save him from this nightmare, I have the most loving, kind, warrior of a brother and that is an ecstasy beyond words. We’re all on the road. We’re here, right where we’re supposed to be. Every one playing their part. The only way I have ever survived when the road gets dark is to let the dark teach me. Every horrible thing I’ve ever had to face has made me a better human. They say the ones who have had to overcome many obstacles are kinder. Maybe a simple piece of beauty to hold onto right now is this: that all of the obstacles around us right now are leading us to a much kinder, wiser, more beautiful world. I have never seen a picture that captures pure joy like this one. Th...is is my baby girl. I caught this moment on a hot summer day on the Lake. We had been swimming since breakfast and out of nowhere, around 2:00, the sky filled with black clouds. I’ll never forget looking at her, both of us barely breathing, as the first drops of a giant downpour fell on our heads. We danced and sang in the freezing cold lake as the warm rain stopped time. Then this: hot chocolate, hair wet, watching the rain from the deck. Everything was right in the world. Safe. Loved. Happy. I live for moments like this. Now there’s high school. When she comes home with armfuls of sadness and stress, I want to coach and fix and make it all go away. I know it’s not what she needs but I can’t stop. I fear her pain is my failure. And then I read this from Glennon Doyle about her daughter in Love Warrior: “I want Amma to grow to be a brave, kind, wise, resilient woman. So what is it in human life that creates bravery, kindness, wisdom, and resilience? What if it’s pain? What if it’s the struggle? What if I was trying to take from Amma the one thing that would make her the woman I dreamed she’d become? The bravest people I know are those who’ve walked through the fire and come out the other side. They are those who’ve overcome, not those who’ve had nothing to overcome. Maybe my job as Amma’s mother is not to protect her from pain, but to hold her hand and walk into it with her. I need to look at her and say, ‘I see your pain. It’s real. I feel it too. We can handle it, baby. We can do hard things.’” Yeeesssss, Glennon. 🙏🏻 I have overcome mountains of pain. I help people do it every day. There are giant gifts in it and I will not protect her from those gifts. Right before this cup of hot chocolate there was rain - in summer! It could have rained on our party but instead we held hands and then had chocolate. I mean, that’s the secret right there. Pure joy is hiding inside the pain. Love you. . . . @glennondoyle Thank you a million times for all the things. . . . #passthechocolate #lovewarriors #luminaries #dancingintherain See More
