When I go to a sporting event, or any other place for that matter, and the national anthem of the United States plays, I place my hand over my heart and face the flag. It’s just what I’ve always done and what I’ve come to believe is the proper thing to do when the national anthem is played. Now, as a father, I’ve taught my young children to do the same and I hope that in the future they also teach their children to do the same. [ 1,136 more word ]
DeShone Kizer threw three interceptions as the Baltimore Ravens (2-0) gave the rookie headaches all afternoon long en route to a 24-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns (0-2) at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Sunday. Kizer, who missed more than a quarter while dealing with a migraine, was unable to gain much traction against a Baltimore defense that has no forced 10 turnovers in just eight quarters this season. The Browns begin their 2017 season today against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Game time is set for 1pm at First Energy Stadium.
DeShone Kizer will be making his NFL debut for the orange and brown, and will give the Browns a chance to stay close if he can remain relatively mistake free in the face of the Pittsburgh blitz, while also continuing to build a relationship with his receivers. Look for coach Hue Jackson to try and get the run game going early to take pressure off of his... young quarterback.
The defense will be ok, even with out first overall pick Myles Garrett who will miss a few weeks with a high ankle sprain, but the Steelers offense is a juggernaut and will score on anyone.
With all of that being said, my prediction:
Calvin Pryor, a former Jets first round pick whom the Browns acquired this offseason via trade, has been released by the team after a fight with a teammate. To take his place on the roster the team will likely take safety Kai Nacua, an I drafted free agent who played well in the preseason for the Browns, off of the practice squad and place him on the 53 man roster.
The Browns have traded a 6th round pick to the Steelers for WR Sammie Coates and a 7th round pick. The pick sent to Pittsburgh is actually the pick the Steelers originally sent it Cleveland for CB Justin Gilbert.
Following a 4-0 preseason, the Browns will be faced with some tough decisions as they cut the roster from 90 players to 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Here are my predictions for each spot: QB (3) DeShone Kizer, Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan RB (3) Isaiah Crowell, Duke Johnson, Matthew Dayes FB (1) Dan Vitale WR (6) Corey Coleman, Kenny Britt, Rashard Higgins, Ricardo Louis, Jordan Leslie, Rannel Hall. Berea--- Earlier on Wednesday, the Cleveland Browns terminated the contract of seven-year veteran and two-time pro bowler Joe Haden. The move saved the Browns $7 million, leaving them to pay just $4 million of the $11.1 million he was owed for the 2017 season. Of course they would only owe that money if Haden signs a deal for less with another team. [ 304 more words ]
Unfortunately won't have time today to do a podcast or Facebook live segment on tonight's matchup between the Browns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so I'll put my thoughts here.
•Kizer isn't as good as he could look tonight, or as bad as he could look tonight. Important to see some comfort with play calling, make decisions at the line of scrimmage, and to control tempo.
•Tampa is a playoff caliber team. They prob will not play a lot of their best guys on D, mainly the someho...w underrated Gerald McCoy. But it is still a damn good scheme with an excellent coordinator in Mike Smith for the Browns to gauge themselves against.
•In spite of this being the dress rehearsal for week one, game plans are still pretty vanilla and this will be nothing like the amount of film and game planning that it will take to prepare for Pittsburgh.
•Trevon Coley could win a starting DT spot. Hopefully DT Caleb Brantley, our 6th round pick, gets a chance to play or else he will likely be cut.
•Who is going to step up at WR? Coleman? Britt? Higgins? Louis? Payton? Jordan Leslie has been solid in camp but unless one of the last three I mentioned prior to Leslie steps up, expect the Browns to start scouring other rosters.
•I said many times Osweiler will not be on this roster come September 10. I still believe that. He won't play tonight and Cody Kessler needs to move on from Captain Checkdown and make some plays to lock that number two spot down behind Kizer.
