Oscar seems really great until you actually need to use your healthcare. In November I called Oscar to ask about mental health coverage options on my plan, and ...an agent of the company told me over the phone that my plan covered visits to in-network therapists with just a $20 copay. I was then referred to a therapist who I began seeing every week.

Flash forward to this past weekend, when I got a letter in the mail informing me that I actually owed $69 per visit, for a total of $520. It turns out my 2016 plan only covered two visits to a therapist - which the agent I spoke to on the phone conveniently forgot to mention to me - and that my 2017 plan, which is more expensive and has a higher deductible, covers no therapy at all. Until I got this letter, I received no notification of the actual cost of my therapy visits - even though I get an email every month when my bill posts.

I've already spent several hours on the phone with two different insurance companies trying to dispute this claim, and it looks like I'll have to spend even more time in the future - hours I'll never get back, correcting a mistake made by a multi-billion dollar company that steadfastly refuses to accept any responsibility for giving me bad information.

Oscar, why did one of your representatives tell me that my therapy would be covered when it wasn't?

Oscar, why wasn't I notified of the real price of my therapist visits sooner? Why did you let me go for three months before telling me the real cost of my treatment?

Oscar, why did my 2016 plan only cover TWO visits to a therapist? Do you believe that all of a person's problems can be resolved in two 45 minute sessions?

Oscar, why does my 2017 plan cost $20 more than my 2016 plan while providing me with less coverage and sticking me with a higher deductible?

Oscar, why don't you take some of the money you spend on ad campaigns about how you make healthcare simple and easy and use it to cover the $520 in medical bills you tricked me into racking up?

Merit based network? I'm ok with that concept.
The real star is the customer service rep that took my phone calls, Charisma M.
I called in frustrated that the s...ystem would not let me make payments online. She explained process and my requirements and handled my frustration and impatience with a smile I could hear through the phone. She listened to my questions, helped come up with solutions. I called back the next day with what I need and was missing on day 1 and she took the opportunity to learn and do an even better job than before.
So, Oscar needs to recognize Charisma M's efforts with me. This post is not to see myself type, but that Charisma M receives appropriate kudos.

Don't think I won't call back to find out.

They were great last year when they were paying to lease the Magnacare list of doctors, but now they cut their costs and stopped paying to be on those lists so ...all, and I mean all, of the doctors that I and my family had, no longer take Oscar. Of course we didn't find this out until after we committed to another year of Oscar because they didn't tell us before the window closed on switching insurances. Tricky. My husband has a heart attack 2 years ago and had stents put in. He has to see his cardiologist every February. He went and found out his cardiologist no longer takes Oscar so we have to find someone who does and not just that but all the relationships we forged with all our doctors. So this year we will be paying our high cost premium ($2300/month) AND our dr bills at 100%. And come November we will switch to an insurance company that can take our money and pay to be on a decent provider list. Like I said, last year they were amazing and really helped us. That's over now. See More

I would call this the worst customer service I have experienced, except Oscar's customer service doesn't seem to exist. I've called the numerous numbers listed ...trying to get in touch during business hours, and have wasted hours of my time listening to their terrible elevator jazz. No one answers. I've sent emails, messages through the website, and have received zero responses. Once they actually have you as a customer, you'll be never be able to get in touch again.

If you're a potential customer reading this because you're interested in buying this insurance, run.

Last year Oscar did not have any anesthesia providers that provided anesthesia services within a 200 mile radius of San Antonio. Now they are holding me respon...sible for an anesthesia bill claiming out of network provider. I used a covered surgeon at a covered hospital for cancer treatment. This occurred last September and I have contacted them over 20 times, spoke to several supervisors, and many many others. I now have 7 days until I get turned over to collections. Oscar said they would contact the provider to try and get an extension while they continue to negotiate with them. They did not even follow through with a simple phone call. Most frustrating company I have ever dealt with. Don't trust their claims of simplified insurance, it must mean they simply won't pay for services that should obviously be covered. See More

For those thinking the gym reimbursements are a great idea - don't be fooled. I've been waiting 5 months and counting for them to send me the rest of 2016's rei...mbursement. And for 2015, I waited 8 months with constant badgering to be reimbursed fully. They tend to send an arbitrary small amount and hope you don't realize its not the full amount. Its such a ridiculously silly process for such a small amount.

I haven't needed any major medical coverage. So I have a high deductible savings plan from Oscar. Everything seems great in theory. Especially for younger individuals who would benefit from the gym reimbursements and daily step goals. Too bad they DONT WORK. The misfit tracker they provided worked intermittently at best. Now they have it synced to google fit which returns a sync error pretty much 80-90% of the time.

For the second year in a row I diligently printed out the gym reimbursement forms and sent them all in. Only to be partially reimbursed - They sent me $200 total when I had filled out both 6 month segments on separate forms demonstrating I had visited over 50 times in each 6 month segment. When I inquired, I was met with a "There must be an error, our claims department is working on it" Last year it took 8 months to resolve. This year its been 5 months and counting.

I will say that their telephone consults work decently well for small problems like prescriptions, but Id hate to think what Oscar is like if I actually needed reimbursement for something substantial like a hospital visit. Will definitely be looking to switch to a different provider if this continues on.

we have been lied to and stolen from by oscar. the oscar sales person told us we would get reimbursed for my homebirth which is why we signed up for oscar. we h...ave long since paid out of pocket for the birth, filed the paper work and oscar says they will "call us back" and the "claim is being processed" but it has been over 6 months and radio silence. when we call they either hang up on us or again say they will "call us back." on top of the $5500 they owe us, we got charged every single ridiculous lab bill that was not our choice but government mandated, i'm talking $200 for a diabetes test I didn't even want to take - and now getting extremely aggressive collection agency letters. this is theft and fraud. steer clear. I was behind on my premium and was given a window of time to make that payment. When I tried to make the payment a full month ahead of the date on the bill from... Oscar they terminated my policy. Then they were not able to give me online access to my account to make a payment that way. Then I was told I had a window of time to pay it and my window of time may expire while waiting for a supervisor to call me back, within 24-48 hrs. Great job Oscar!!!! See More

My Misfit step tracking sync worked from January to the summer, and suddenly stopped syncing with an infuriating message "Oops something went wrong, please try ...again in a few minutes." Oscar support and their tech were no help at all and assured me they were "looking into it." For a startup that prides itself on technology, they should NOT be dragging their feet to fix app issues with step tracking. This makes me think that their app is not syncing by design so that they don't have to give amazon credit to people.

I was excited to see they now use google fit to track steps, but yet again the app cannot sync to google fit with the same useless "Oops" message. Their support has no idea what this error message means and neither do their programmers (which is curious because you would think the people coding the app would know their own error message).

So essentially from the summer until now I haven't gotten the $1 a day for taking 10,000 steps which amounts to a few hundred dollars accumulated. I realize in comparison to others' reviews about not getting covered for thousands that my problem seems frivolous, but I think it highlights the disconnect between their promises and what they actually deliver.

Once there's another company with very low premiums and a high deductible (catastrophic plan) I would switch in a heartbeat. The lack of follow up and care they are exhibiting to fix an issue with one of their main "benefits" leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm legitimately terrified of getting sick or injured now because of how difficult it is to deal with them.

You have terrible customer service and your list of doctors healthcare providers are not up to date. Slim choices if any. I have been trying to to find a locati...on to perform an Xray on an injured foot with no luck. Every reference an Oscar associate has given me is wrong. Who still takes Oscar insurance anymore is the questions of the month. A stressor a member should not have to deal with. See More

I had my first in-person consult today at the Jay St Center and my socks were knocked off my feet. The relaxed environment, the coffee and tea, the freebies on ...the way out all combined with killer service from the lovely team. My doctor has the bedside manner of Benedict Cumberbatch in female form, she swiftly and gently looked over my ailments and provided swift recommendations. All this made for a VERY different doctors visit than the usual. Highly recommend Emily, and the team. I would like to say I'll be seeing you again but fingers crossed not too often, although you do have meetings rooms and free WIFI. See More

i've had nothing but positive experiences dealing with Oscar. In a world where healthcare continues to get more and more confusing, I think Oscar keeps it sim...ple and straight forward. Last year I was hesitant to sign up after reading so many bad reviews on here, but now one year in and I'm happy with everything. We are relatively healthy folks, that love the doctor on call feature, getting reimbursed for staying active (by getting in steps), and an easy experience with everything. Thank You to everyone at Oscar for trying to do Healthcare differently! See More

The absolute worst health insurance company in the world.
1. They tell you you're covered but then you are left owing money thousands of dollars.
2. They tell y...ou will get reimbursed for medical procedures and they never give you the money back!!!! After you provide all the receipts and paperwork.
3. They have the worst doctors in network.
4. you get lab work done and your doctor sends it to one of the two only laboratories in LA. And they tell you that your basic lab work is not covered by your insurance. Sarah left with even more debt.
This company needs to get sued ASAP!!!!

I would have put 5 stars up until recently... however, I've been waiting for 2 months for an MRI approval for my back!!!! And my doctor said you required a "pee...r to peer" review... still haven't gotten the go ahead. Meantime I'm in terrible pain to the point I can't sleep well at night from tossing and turning in pain ... I've mostly used my insurance in the past 3 years for well checks.. thank goodness overall heathy... a few minor things in between ... now that I'm in pain I get nothing!!!! So terribly disappointed... never abused the system, and when I need it it's neglected me... And to boot... you've dropped ALL my doctors... and hospitals... Now all of a sudden I've gotten several emails and phone calls to renew for next year... well today was last day for enrollment... and I didn't choose you... See More

As self-employed, we pay through the roof for coverage and most of our doctors are not on the plans. BUT, the entire year of 2016, I did not pay a dime for any ...prescriptions and had one filled today under my new Oscar plan. The cost was normally $500 and I paid nothing. I had knee surgery in October and had a fantastic surgeon through Oscar. Sure, you have to do your homework on pricing and coverage, but ours has been far better than any BCBS we have had and paid premiums of $1900 per month for coverage. Give it a try. See More

The WORSE insurance company.... had to cancel in oct yet paid in advance for November. Been almost 6 months and all I get is " we're mailing you a check" and we...'ve mailed it but we'll cancel that and mail another" over and over. I've asked for a manager to call me and all I get is " They'll call you in 24-48 hours" well it's been a month and I left 3 messages. For a lousy 66.00$ I have to fight for it .... have not heard from or received MY MONEY!!!! THIEVES!!!!!!! See More

At the moment I am quite disappointed with Oscar Health! First of all, I attempted to make an appointment with two doctors on their list and was told they no l...onger accept the plan. On my third attempt, I made an appointment with a wonderful MD, Dr. Robin Baradarian whom I was told by BOTH parties accepts the plan. Just yesterday, AFTER I had my office visit back in mid January I received a bill for nearly $500. It read that Dr. Robin was not in network! When phoning Oscar's customer service I was greeted by a very friendly representative (I must say everyone I have ever spoken to on the phone is always quite friendly & attentive to my needs, but this does not help my health much, nor does it help this unexpected bill) who explained to me that that MD was in the middle of changing their contract with Oscar health. #1, they were listed when I made the appointment, #2, Oscar Health helped me select this particular MD at the time of my making the appointment, #3, I don't give a crap about WHY my claim was not accepted, I just want the bill to be paid as it rightfully should be (esp since the $500 is actually less than I pay monthly for my plan)
Furthermore I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy scheduled with this MD and it was canceled due to the above mentioned reasons. I suffer with an illness that makes these things necessary, and I previously did not bother making necessary doctors appointments due to anxiety related medical issues. After finally attempting to correct health problems, a health-plan that I originally thought I would LOVE turned into what looks like it will be a nightmare. Perhaps it should get one and a half stars as it offers a $1 a day incentive for me to walk a certain number of steps & I got an amazon gift card from them. I am beyond frustrated at this point & now I am stuck with them until Dec 2017! Arghh!

I have read all the negative things in these reviews and makes me wonder if we're talking about the same "Oscar". Personally, I think they are wonderful! I have... NO complaints and think customer service is one of the best. I had Oscar, last year and again this year and they have had their work cutout for them. I have experienced 2 surgerys since I enrolled and have found Oscar to be right on top of things!! I'm sorry to hear that some people have had negative experiences with "Oscar" but I'm not one of them... See More

While I was traveling at Xmastime I started having vision problems that could have been very serious. I was very upset and requested assistance from Oscar Docto...r on call. I spoke at length to the Doctor who like me realized the situation could be very serious, I also STRESSED to him my concern about being out of network and the costs, I said maybe I should go to ER or to Urgent Care center, he told me that even if I did that I would still need to see an Ophthalmologist, in fact he very kindly told me he had done a residency at an eye clinic where I was and he would call me right back. When he called me back he told me to go to an eye clinic and that they were waiting to see me he had made all the arrangements. Thankfully the Doctor there said it was not anything threatening and to be sure and see my Doctor in a couple weeks. I got a bill for full amount of visit and was told Oscar denied any benefit since I was out of network. I have called and spoken to a concierge and a supervisor explained at length I followed the exact instructions of the Doctor on call who is clearly on their website no disclaimers that person is not employed by Oscar. The concierge told me the D.O.C. does not necessarily know proper procedures...UM EXCUSE ME why encourage people to use the service then? I asked to speak to supervisor, explained at length again what happened it was only after I said I was going to write it up on YELP did she say let me see if we can anything else. I am paying almost $700 a month for Oscar, I followed advice of D.O.C. and it is infuriatling to me that Oscar will not work with me on this. So am I to understand if I have a heart attack out of town and am out of network I will have the same situation? This is so unfair. BEWARE people. See More
