It's almost a it's almost a shield use projects over. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, That was that was a wild day on each side of it now we're gonna try a lot, My friends said he wanted to get a shout out. I was like just press all over yourself. It's the best way. If you really want it, I can't imagine one. hi how y'all doing Do you like that? I love it. Yeah. I got crazy last night. Huh. No. no. I was like. Hey, let's go this way you get a tear gas that was dumb. I'm sorry that was stupid I. I'm sorry that was stupid and I shouldn't have done that I don't know what I was thinking was let's go. and I fucked me up. I have a mask on I was ready to go. fuck me up. Like Nice, Yeah, it goes down. Get behind me. I got baby. That's right. Get this for this, you know you don't have to it's kinda nice. It's like so much. Yeah, I can pull out my other camera too that isn't connected to WiFi cuz that's what I'm gonna try to do from now on. I heard a lot of concern about capturing people's faces so well, I mean I get I get you know I it's I understand. It. I just wanna make sure I'm doing everything I can to like continue documenting what's going on the front line but also do my very best to protect people's identity. So the thing that I consider I got another phone So now this one just goes you know not connected right so this is where we pick up just what's happening. You know that everyone's gonna see anyways and this is the one that we pick up things that we might wanna look at later now What is no this one 's live. This is my baby. Oh the other one. I love this guy ranting about something I don't know I don't give up. You guys talking about you got a shirt on I love it. Yeah. He's great. I don't wanna catch that. Sorry, my bad. I got like a really wide shoulders. I'm always bumping into people at this point. I don't know if you all saw me but. yeah, hey puppy. So, it's gonna be over here, throwing some shit away really quick. We got some people holding the Street. cuz I don't know if you all have been paying attention to that part, but there's been a lot of like cars. hitting protesters things so nowadays whenever folks gather they just you'll always see like a line of of people blocking off the streets and really just making sure everybody's safe. So. Can I get a picture of your sign? Oh I saw a point six earlier, I was like we're gonna be there in the front lines when it starts going and she said she wouldn't be with someone else would be. First part of me that. I think I know where I wanna be. It's my first. time do we start So it's really hard to say and as far as what time police are crowding in there's already been one arrest tonight. A man was yeah, he's laying out there and was arrested. so yeah, it's really hard to say you know and and you know I'm geared up cuz anytime I've got. I've got my anxiety my brothers unfortunately the cops come down here and I'm I'm expecting him to arrest me just make a statement. Oh, it's terrible. That's just yeah. that's fine. I'm I'm ready for it. Yeah. Well. damn that's personal. I'm curious exactly what time I expect to see him and his crew out here. I'll be right over the You haven't seen much book PPV around. Okay. It's the most, but it depends. It's hard. It's really hard to identify I was just talking to a lot of people about how that is scary when you can't know you don't know who is really arresting you don't know really what's going on so you know I have, he said me too. Hey I'm gonna take this position. I'm gonna hand it off to and I'm talking about. Hi everybody. My name is my pronoun and I'm a Street medic here in Portland I have. It is for. almost two years now I wanna say I work I was trained with rose hips medical Collective here in town and I do work mostly with the Portland action medics. I don't know if any of y'all have been trained or raise your hand if you've done this, if you're with me, Oh my God Yay. I'm so happy to get it. so Street vending is pretty much the our always say that we take care. Right to be a screening is like at the heart of like we take care of us right. as a Street I see it as my job to spread calm But first and foremost is home to the crowd try to I try to like when people come to me and they're like the cops are coming. There's 20 trucks full of practical for 200 pounds. Walk away. I'm just like. Are we really like let us take a look. Let's take a breath here and then let's do some risk assessment right like let's assess the situation before we freak everybody out right so that is me and like 70 percent of the time. that's what I'm doing another like 30 percent of the time. I'm like actually treating people and this is anywhere from tear gas and pepper spray exposure. broken bones scrapes scratches allergies asthma Tylenol more recently, some very gruesome things you know that we don't have to touch on it, but you know Street medics take care of all of it if some of you don't know this, I thank you Thank you. so I do what I do because I love all of you because I love the people who show up in the city and I love our movements. I love I love everybody. This is why I do what I do so a couple of things that everyone should know to keep themselves safe in the streets is seriously do not wear contacts. ever out. I don't care if you're like, Oh, I'm just going down for an hour and like they'll never me like don't wear contacts just don't do it. contacts when they come like the plastic lenses when they come in contact with OC, which is pepper spray and CS, which is tear gas they can cause the context to adhere to your eye and essentially you have like you get stuck on there and you need surgery or. Like that's the worst case scenario, the best case scenario you have to get it off before any of us could flush your eyes, which like then it's sounds as painful as it is like it's like us. So let's see a couple of things that we can do to keep ourselves safe close-toe shoes or another one. I really tell people I'm not going out tonight as you can see I am wearing my very sexy summer. Tina sandals tonight Thank you. As a way to make sure that I do not end up downtown after this because I have to go home and change first so close-toe shoes and this is because in situations where we get like bull rush by the police and suddenly you're like arm and arm with the comrades and you're like walking quickly and determinedly away from the police you can stumble on things and sometimes like the back of your shoes can get pulled off. It's up to me before Most recently when I was blinded by tear gas, one of the most recent times and I was running through North Portland. going through a. oh my God where were we are in a gas station? We're gonna chase through a gas station while they fired see us canisters, sparking on us in a gas station and I was tripping over Sparky canisters in a gas station under my feet and if I hadn't been wearing sand. I can't even imagine the state of my team after that whole thing so close to her or stereo touch my shit. Okay. Cool. Yeah. So if you need a medic Street to kind of people that really hang out towards the back of the crowd and actions you might see us like popping around most recently our medical collective rose hips and Portland action medics have been making hand sanitizer. wipes, which are help get the tear gas and pepper spray off in your face and eye wash and so you'll see like wagons with our local medics and it kinda handing them out. That's I collect. It's set to Portland on it. You can trust it, but you can use it if you use it, it will help you if you need it. we always are also wonderful. We do not every night but you are like I know some of them are fantastic people most recently a member of our collective has purchased a D Commission ambulance. We are out there. I believe we're calling the move which is an acronym for something, but the other name for it is the Abu, which is my favorite for it. So if you need it call like you can't actually call it. it's it won't show up. just. So let's see. okay. So what the biggest thing that I really wanna cover with everyone here tonight is how to flush. Okay. so I would recommend oh am I still on should I move over you're good good? Okay. are you in? Yeah? Okay cool. So I just wanna make sure we're all good. okay. so I really really recommend a spray top water bottle for this because you want the pressure primarily it's the actual forceful stream of the water that will get the most out of your eyes. if you think about it like if you've ever had a chemistry lab like in the I wash stations, you stick your eyes over and it just. Fresh water up in your eyes you're essentially wanting to recreate that so. Okay, get it I know right I've done this so many times before so you wanna hold your eyelid open. I'm gonna talk through it and then I'm gonna show it so you wanna hold your eyelid open tilt your head to the side and flush from your tear ducts out teared up out you want to avoid getting any schmucks on the rest of your sinuses. so just like this. Yeah. So again, it's supposed to the other side you hold your eye open. Yes, it's from. out and that's it until you start to feel cool down. Okay. I want you to be safe out here at kids like I really want you to stay healthy you. one more thing if you do get a pepper spray or tear gas when you get home, take a cold shower, a cold shower hot water will exacerbate and then you're gonna wanna wash all of your clothes separately from the other ones the police are not going to help you if you get injured in protest, they're just gonna walk over you that so we keep us safe. real quick. we're gonna do know your rights or as I like to call it ain't no laws when we're drinking clause. Can Europe oh yes, we're going to do a know your rights real quick and the joke was ain't no laws when you're drinking claws. again, we're not your mother think about if you're going to consume alcohol before you go out at best, you're gonna have to pee a lot at where you're gonna be hungover in jail and it fucking sucks okay. so this is not legal advice. I'm not any kind of lawyer and I'm definitely not your lawyer getting arrested is not fun or cool. you don't get any bonus activist points if you get arrested so don't think that you have to. Of the number one thing is just don't talk to cops. Don't talk to cops. don't talk to. Set go talk to. Cops don't have the cops. Thank you. can and will you been lying all fucking day in the media They will lie to your face. They will lie to your friends. They will lie to you, but you cannot lie to them. so don't talk to them always assume you're being recorded anytime you're interacting with the police officer anytime you're in jail anytime you're in a station. assert your rights and stay calm. This is the best thing you can do. Stay calm state your rights repeatedly vocally and loudly so not only the after but other people can hear you ask and again. You might just get stepped up, you might not have time or the ability to do some of these things, However, am I being detained if they say, yes, ask why ask what is your reasonable and articulable suspicion? They're supposed to again they're supposed to be able to tell you the thing that they are detaining you for. They can't just say I don't know again. not like Hobbs give a shit about the law. Again loudly state, I will not resist you that I do not consent to any search. I want a lawyer. again, you probably won't get one if you're being held overnight so the best thing you can say is I've been booking my right to stay silent. You can't just say silent because our country's fucked up you have to say I'm invoking my right to stay silent. Do you say anything else when you're being held like if you ask to use the restroom or you drink the water you have to then reassert your right to stay silent. It's silly. I know, but just say I'm a book for my right to stay silent. You don't need to know. Or any of that just say I'm invoking my right to stay silent just so you know in it's not illegal to refuse to identify yourself, but if you don't if you don't have a state ID on you, the police will likely hold you until they can ascertain your identity or you'll be like the last person to be that night. Again keep silent on the turning your rights. What do we say? Thank you the number one tool of the police is fear. It's not tear gas. it's fear the goal of this is to gather information for the purpose of charging you and the people you care about with crimes. Stay strong. Stay silent. wait to get mailed out and let the lawyers handle it. Yeah one more thing before we do a really quick Q and A I just wanna say if you're at a protest and you're uncomfortable with the actions happening at a protest regardless of what they are just leave. Thank you. We're not here. Other people if you don't like what someone's doing. Real quick Q and A any questions is this on the website. This is not on the website we can potentially make it available. Yes when person way in the. I started. Kids the question was about what happens if you're arrested as a juvenile, I'll be honest. I don't know I don't know if any of this. That's right, we fucked up and we will find that out. Thank you same thing. I would just say don't talk to cops I assume if you're detained, they will probably try contact with the Guardian, but I'm not sure. Is there a question that statement? it's Clara? Oh, so we'll get that information. question back on the table. Ah I will recommend some experience not smuggling you watched your body under clothes it's really hard tonight like grab your copy and really I know ah but yeah so I also do know that ah the capsation in just not a way that it does humans ah like it doesn't Hurt them, it's bad but personally I tried to shower before I get a new tear gas or pepper spray on my my my my fussy babies. If you have a question you wanna stand up to scout or maybe we could pass a bike or something is there anything I can. I heard it. Yeah. Can you answer that? You have the question I'm Andrew one of the. the question was what if you need an ASL interpreter number one the cost don't give a fuck about access so demand that is if you see a that person that's being detained. They're probably not going to have an interpreter through that entire experience. So you yourself can call signing resources and interpreters. It's Sri if you just Google, that it's the first thing that comes up, they have contracts with the city that will provide us 20 - 47, a lot of Legally certified and that's what they do. They're on things like that, unfortunately. the. The other agency that I would say would probably have contracted interpreters so that is access services in northwest a SMW seekers crossed the group that I run does not do that. I just wanted to clarify that since we're having this discussion so definitely knowing the local agencies that work in the city starting with those two is fast. I would also reach out to find the face. See why NASP ACE time and space they're trying to get a lot of likes and Safety and other information to be accessible for the deaf community. they need a lot of help with captioning videos and making things accessible. So that's a great way for you to get plugged in as well and get more resources from there. Is it? I've heard that if you. So, I feel like that comes with everyone's. Oh okay. Yeah. so the question was what do you do with your gear like your helmet? your goggles your respirator. Do you keep them on the whole time and you pull them out like when stuff gets spicy is that good, You can also just. Said that if you love The targeting thirsty Yeah. so. For yourself, Yeah. hey, so the question that we're getting asked right now is in regards specifically to like oh. And and so that tactical question is in regards to whether or not you should keep your gear. I want you to understand that like this falls back to that, like more thing that we're talking about to be honest I've actually been looking at the self-defense or like protective here as well and I want you to understand that when we're talking about the military, we're talking about people who are trained who hurt you. that is like something that you're taught in the military Essentially is if you see gear or if you see where someone's going to be protected, they intentionally will hit you in other places so like. For me, for example, I make sure that like I wear it also I'm a target so I'm gonna tell you all but I will wear my elbow pads like underneath my shirt like on underneath my long sleeve shirt. Obviously, you can't hide that you're wearing a helmet but something that is important is to look at the type of helmet that you're wearing right. so it's less of it's kind of like part common sense and also part like if you can get away with hiding it and still having mobility. I would say go for it cuz you don't want them to know where not to hit you. Don't wait, I've been I'm in my bag and like it's gonna be fine. I'm not gonna get to your guest and then you get to your guest and then trying to put all that stuff later So sometimes we're we're out on the front lines and the costs charge it's instinctual to run because you don't wanna get caught. Obviously I'm wondering what are the what instances are there exceptions when you it's okay to run or in those specific instances cuz sometimes I'm one of those people right at the front, I wanna know how to navigate that when they're actually brushing and charging that. So another thing that I think it's important for us to understand this when we're talking about tactics and the kind of a personal thing. first of all. so I wanna acknowledge that like we talked about earlier this is based on risk assessment right it's why we say that if you're like this and able body, you can be at the front now the main goal of the whole Don't run thing is to keep us together to hold the line now something that we've been talking about a lot of us have been talking about. they're being a need for in Portland is more tactical training outside of just showing up downtown and wing it. And it really relies on people being committed and brave and connected on the front lines to really make a gauge of how long you're gonna be able to hold the line because ideally like when we talk about make a change when we talk about whole life like ideally, you're gonna have people. laid up right and so you're gonna wanna have arms length and ideally you have a few rows of people are in place like this is what we mean when we say tactical decisions. If you can all stay as long as possible and then the first line of people gets so that they get like enveloped by the crowd and then the next line can take their place like that's the goal like we wanna be able to like let the people. a reasonable pace and be replacing them with fresh people. So it's really about like what your personal risk is and I'm gonna let a full share a little bit more. So, yeah, Thank you. that's exactly right well. I would also like to add that recently, there's been a lot of people really fond of like making Shields and doing all these things right. but doing that inherently talks with the responsibility that you are going to be a shield for somebody for people right and so ideally in my mind the goal would be to have a front line of Hess holding the line with the people behind them holding them up and then everyone together. You can follow the move backwards as a one massive block so that when they do Bowles, we have the numbers to be like no you can't push this back like that, instead of turn tail and running which splits up the crowd causes Mass panic people fall or trip over stuff the attack you like clothes as soon as you're on the ground. that's why when we say like don't run, stay together. Stay tight be physically need like. Together stay as close as you can because we outnumber that from the bottom line. So when we talk about two like Lions, so like something that I want you all to start looking up as like a Hong Kong protest tactics. In the front like that line of people that are actually locked up with you but then behind them like it is standing here with the shield. Personally, I'm gonna be right behind probably hopefully with an umbrella right and so we could have a lot of fields. Second line is behind and I've got like a hand on the shoulder too because we really need to be able to be connected and trust each other in regards to like keep me that sort of like guidance piece cuz if we're backing up with it's backing up and I have like I see on their back like we're gonna be. Together and not having to worry about stumbling the people in the back are gonna be keeping eyes out and we said I mean ideally have. folks that are either on the front line with both feel sort of mixed in with people who have those deep flows and people who are standing in front of the front-lines and have those cones where they're pouring water into the traffic cones to stop. It's here gas like we need to really look at using the tools that we have in the hands and the facts and. As we all hate, the military like we are fighting against the military right now and so we really have to start acting we're thinking about the ways that we are moving to a week. We're talking about like this back and forth sort of things. Ah well so the question was what happens if you are arrested and you need medical attention ah there is sure So there's a lot of different down with that so And you are arrested while you're Unation, you have no control, you have no consent the police will most likely send to the manual hospital if you were arrested downtown, that's where they've been sending those people in the ER if you need medical attention like you are pepper spray or if you're bloody or something like that, chances are you're not gonna get that care in gym nurses. Really don't give a shit and hopefully you get that hair when you come out and you come to your friends and you'll support. that's what you have done and things there too. and real quick. I'm also wanna add on the subject of what do you do and I really wanna be clear. It's not like they probably will not It's like a nine out of 10 stands, but you will not receive any care, but this is where we talk about the preparation part because when we talk about support forms, but you have to understand that it's important for folks to have. I'm sure you're covered but also making sure that you have those lists of the medical needs and things so that the people that are taking care of you from the outside and advocating for you and if they like, for instance you are detained for a longer period of time right, let's say you're under arrest to take for a bit. You get your phone call and you're like hey, I'm not getting my medication people on the outside of organized together to put pressure on. That's something that we do a lot of organizing but there's. Really and I'm immediate answer for that as long as you are in custody and unfortunately. Power Yeah. The police said when you went to jail. Do you wanna do you feel like coming up and sharing your story with the crowd? You can take the light out of the stand. I was there the. I I waited. As kids, I had a. marks on. along. They. So that I have from my CT scan. And I have taken it out. so I have been. To figure out who I am. and if you can walk. like you're out of here. you can walk out the door. It's been.
