22 years ago 16 children and their teacher were killed by a gunman in Dunblane, Scotland. The survivors now reach out to the survivors of the 17 murdered in Parkland.
Families of the children and teacher who were killed in the Dunblane school shooting 22 years ago today send a message to survivors of the Parkland school shoot...ing who are planning to protest for gun law reform in the US. The Dunblane massacre led the UK to enforce some of the strictest firearms legislation in the world, outlawing private ownership of most handguns. Almost overnight, 200,000 gun owners had their weapons banned, a law which was enforced with heavy fines and up to 10 years in prison.

These are the things we can do: increase reporting of threats, have a comprehensive approach to assessing threats, improve "school climate," have tools to remove guns from someone deemed a threat, and reduce access to guns through universal background checks and banning the most dangerous guns and accessories.

Do we need to put our money where our hearts and minds are?
There are a couple things I've learned gun rights folks are good at, internet trolling and supporting their cause, with money and votes.
Check out this week's e...pisode of #ActionsToWithstand to hear about how those of us pro-gun control folks (the majority) can leverage the midterm elections to make reducing gun violence a winning issue for candidates through our dollars and our votes.

So I am confused. When the person with the AR-15 comes down the hall firing dozens of rounds in seconds, is the teacher armed with a handgun supposed to open th...e classroom door and expose the children to rapid gunfire while she tries to shoot the guy spraying her with bullets?
Do you think the children’s screams would distract her from getting a good shot?
Or is she supposed to hide the children in closets and cabinets before opening the door to the guy with the semiautomatic weapon?
Is she wearing the handgun all day every day? Is it loaded? Is it concealed under her clothes or in a holster on her waist? Could a child with impulse control issues grab the loaded handgun from her and use it against her or the other students?
And when she is holding and aiming a loaded weapon and the police respond to the 911 call, how will they know that she’s a good guy with a gun and not the bad guy with a gun? How will they know not to mistake her for the shooter and shoot her?
Will the bonuses for the teachers carrying guns come from the money saved by cutting Title I funding or from the money saved by cutting funding for the arts? Or is it coming from the money we’re saving by not funding investigations of college rape reports? I am just wondering if guns are more important than reading or art or girls’ safety - trying to draw out the priorities of our country on a flowchart.
The shooter who killed my beautiful butterfly Dylan carried 10 thirty-round, large-capacity gun ammunition magazines into Sandy Hook Elementary. 300 rounds. He ...deliberately left the smaller-capacity magazines at home.
In approximately four minutes, he shot 154 bullets, killing 20 children and six educators. Five of those bullets hit Dylan, and in an instant, my little boy was gone.
But in the time it took the shooter to reload, 11 children were able to escape. If magazines were limited to one-third the number of rounds available that day, just think how many more children could have survived. Perhaps Dylan would still be alive today. Perhaps more people would have escaped from the horrific mass shootings in Las Vegas and Texas.
That's why I'm trying to gather 50,000 petition signatures demanding Congress limit the size of gun magazines. But we're still several thousand short, and it looks like you haven't signed yet. So please, sign the petition right now to help save lives.

Does Rubio deserve credit for even showing up at the Parkland Town Hall? Maybe, but ... "As a moment in American politics, the pummelling of Rubio felt like an expression of collective rage at the falseness of so much that happens in Washington: the pivot, the dodge, the pallid follow-up question...In several minutes on a weeknight, they laid bare Rubio’s central political flaw—inauthenticity—more vividly than I ever could in a magazine profile." https://www.newyorker.com/…/cnns-town-hall-on-guns-and-the-…

"Last week's horrific massacre of 14 students and three staff members in Parkland, Fla., has reinvigorated the national debate over assault weapons. A Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday, for instance, found that 67 percent of Americans, including 53 percent of gun owners, say they favor such a ban — the highest level of support seen on this question since 20 children and six educators were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012." https://www.washingtonpost.com/…/the-real-reason-congress…/…
