‪#‎TodayInHistory‬ Justin Dart, fierce disability rights leader & Father of the ADA, died on this date 14 years ago at the age of 71, from congestive heart fail...ure related to complications of post-polio syndrome.

Among Dart's many achievements was receiving the Medal of Freedom, our nation's highest civilian award in 1998. His life and legacy continue to inspire us all to love each other no matter our difference--gender, ability, orientation, race, or class.

Time and again Dart stressed that his achievements were only possible with the help of hundreds of activists, colleagues, and friends. "There is nothing I have achieved without the love and support of specific individuals who reached out to empower me...There is nothing I have accomplished without reaching out to empower others."

I am extremely upset and still trying to calm my nerves after being thrown out of yet another Disability Network West Michigan Board Meeting, which nearly got physical. A new Board Member approached me where I was sitting in the audience portion of the room during public comment. He stood immediately in front of me and put a folder literally inches in front of my face so that I could not see the Board. I told him very firmly twice to back away from me immediately. At that point, he took one step backward and began waving the folder to block my vision, mockingly saying “I backed up” repeatedly. We were then removed and the entire meeting was held behind closed doors – again. This is not Independent Living. ‪#‎MiCILs‬ ‪#‎consumercontrolnow‬

It looks like they're making Hackley Library accessible. Let's get this right, Muskegon!

Here are illustrations of how the front will look:

"I’m not telling you to fix systemic oppression, I’m telling you to acknowledge it. Look at it. Look at it, it’s so ugly. It’s so big. It’s so scary. It’s the m...onster that’s still there when you turn on the lights. In fact it’s bigger when you turn on the lights. Some people don’t ever get to ignore that monster, some people don’t ever get to stop feeling afraid. Why should you?"

I have said all of this a hundred times but advocate Dohn Hoyle has articulated the issues of guardianship in a way everyone should understand - this is why we we fight for disability rights in our Peer Action Alliance

It's not like you're just a few rights short of full citizenship. Somebody else controls your life, as if you're a child. But they do things with you that we wouldn't do to kids.

The Good, the Bad, and the Unapproachable: Harm and the Well-Intended Ableist

"So what harm does it do when non-disabled professionals speak as experts on the disability experience? It undermines our power individually and as community. It reinforces the stereotype of not-able, not-equally-capable. It supports the ableist culture that is more disabling than any actual disability."

This six-minute video was taken today outside the room where Disability Network West Michigan (Muskegon’s “Center for Independent Living”) held another closed B...oard meeting – in violation of Michigan’s Standards & Assurances. The video features Executive Director Tamera Collier explaining the answers to our most important questions, including whether they ever intend to meet with consumers; whether they’re willing to share the names of Board members with the public; where on earth their 2015 990s are; and more!

Please watch this video to experience what it feels like to interact with a Center for independent Living that has gone totally off the rails. ‪#‎consumercontrolnow‬

Me Before You is being described by the disability community as a snuff film that promotes society's belief that it is better to be dead than disabled.

"There is also a problem with how gleefully nondisabled people seem to adopt the idea that it is better to be dead than disabled citing “the people who really feel that way” but rarely is ever actually engaging with those people and certainly never engaging with those who don’t agree because let’s be honest, they only bring up the former to silence the latter."

Warning: This post includes comprehensive spoilers for the book Me Before You, a book that deals with disability and assisted suicide. It also deals with sexual assault. It has taken me mont…

Here is a great reminder on what tone policing is. A criticism of the tone of an article, rather than the argument itself stems from unacknowledged privilege and only serves to derail and silence.

“Calm down so we can discuss this like adults.” Ever said something like this in a conversation on oppression? Tone policing is no way to get justice, and this comic will help you understand exactly why.

Check out a video on CDR's YouTube channel, filmed when CDR and members of Rochester ADAPT visited the Goodwill headquarters in Buffalo NY to ask them to give u...p their 14(c) certificate.

In the video: A Goodwill in Upstate New York was found to pay sub-minimum wages to people with disabilities. When Rochester ADAPT confronted the manager of this business, he simply explains that he does not want to give up the certificates. He also claims that the people working there are happy to be paid a small amount.

This kind of discrimination goes on every day and people with disabilities are expected to work and accept the pay they are given.

Queens Against Goodwill does not believe anyone should be treated like this!

Are you a Queen/King that also thinks people with disabilities should be paid fairly? Send us an email at QueenTeam@cdrnys.org.
