This year Pillsbury was proud to participate in the Generous Associates Campaign, a fundraising drive in support of the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia. As the leading fundraiser in our size category, we were invited along with nine other firms to participate in the Legal Aid Generous Associates campaign cooking competition.
The competition is conducted “Iron Chef” style in that you have about 45 minutes to whip up a dish using the secret ingredient. (The secret... ingredient: cherries.) This year's panel of celebrity judges consisted of Chef Ben Schramm of The Pub & The People and Chef Krystal Cripe of Red Hen, Bonnie Benwick, Deputy Food Editor & Recipe Editor with the Washington Post.
On the strength of a balsamic reduction cherry sauce made by Lori Panosyan, our team got third place! It was a tasty finish to a 2017 campaign in support of a great organization.
ACC Southern California Members Stand Up For Human Rights
On Wednesday, November 8, 2017, ACC Southern California partnered with Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman... LLP ("Pillsbury") and Human Rights First for an asylum clinic. Human Rights First is a non-profit organization that provides pro bono legal representation to asylum seekers in the United States. It has been a leading force in the development of refugee policy and the representation of asylum seekers for nearly forty years. Its aim is to ensure that asylum laws, policies and practices in the US are fair and consistent with international refugee law and human rights standards.
On this day, approximately 20 ACC Southern California members and Pillsbury attorneys received a 2-hour training on asylum law. During the first hour, the training covered the basic framework of asylum law and asylum eligibility requirements. During the second hour, the training focused on representing a client before the asylum office and on preparing a winning claim. After the training, all clinic participants met with asylum seekers from Uganda and provided assistance with their asylum applications and declarations. All participants had the opportunity to continue to work with these asylum seekers after the clinic by providing full representation in partnership with Pillsbury attorneys.
Maru Johansen, former Mexicana Airlines counsel and one of the participants in this clinic, said "It was a privilege to meet the refugee that I assisted at the clinic. Learning what she went through due to repression of basic freedoms, like association, and disrespect of civil liberties reminded me that we so often take them for granted and that we should be aware and vigilant that our country keeps such freedoms intact as they are the heart of democracy. I am grateful to ACC for providing opportunities to us to serve, through the practice of law, those in dire need and make a positive impact on our communities and the world."
