Hey everyone it’s Hunter here! I know it’s been a long time, especially since I personally last posted so I wanted to give u guys an update and ask for a little help. First off college has been great! I’ve met and befriended so many people and just accepted a bid to join the phi delta theta fraternity! Being independent and pursuing a psychology degree has made me happier than I’ve been in a long time.

Even though I’m a full time student I’m still working on walking again. I... go to physical therapy once a week and try to stay active by going to the gym several days a week. Below is an example of how fast I’ve come in the last few months.

Before I go I also wanted to mention a camp that I want to go to in the summer called camp possibility. It is a camp that allows people with disabilities to do things they never thought were possible and have opened my eyes to the perspectives of other people and to always appreciate life. THEY ARE HAVING A T-SHIRT SALE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CAMP AND EVERY ONE I SELL EARNS ME 5$ TOWARDS CAMP FEES. I’ll include a link below to purchase them. TYPE MY NAME IN THE “NOTES” BOX SO THEY KNOW I SENT YOU.

Lastly I wanted to again thank all of those that have continued to follow my story and support me through these last 4 years. Without u i know I wouldn’t be where I am today. Thank you and I hope to update you all again in the future!

This time of year is always tough for us. Christmas will never quite be the same for me. Although it is still a joyous season celebrating the birth of our Savior, it also brings a plethora of emotions. On December 7, 2013, my son was broken, my heart was broken and our lives changed forever. The shock of having your son go to school like any other freshman on a Friday and become a quadriplegic on Saturday as a result of the innocence of participating in a high school sport, i...

High on our thankful list is The Swim With Mike organization. Swim With Mike has made Hunter’s independent journey to college a reality. He’s having a busy and wonderful first semester doing things many didn’t think would be possible when he was hurt 4 years ago. Please take a minute to watch this video and share with others. Donations to Swim With Mike are making dreams into reality for many young disabled athletes. Thank you SWM!!!! ♥️ 🏊‍♂️

Please pray for Joshua and his family. He is a friend of Gracie and Dr. Brian Gaspard. Dr. Gaspard was the surgeon who operated on Hunter the day of his injury. We know the power of prayer and how incredibly hard these first days are!!! He has a C 4/5 injury from a trampoline accident and is 17 years old. 🙏🏻

My dear friend Fay's son, Joshua Southworth broke his neck on Sept 25, 2017, in a trampoline accident. He is 17. The diagnosis doesn't look good, but hundreds and hundreds of people are praying for the Lord Jesus to heal him completely! We are standing in faith, believing for a miracle! While you...

Convocation is complete with author JD Vance as the guest speaker. His memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, was the required summer reading for MTSU. I read it to make sure Hunter read it, but ended up so touched by JD's experiences, his bravery to ask tough questions about the crisis many children, especially in our geographical area, are facing and his emphasis on how being involved in our communities is so important to our children's success. We know first hand the difference an invol...ved and engaged community makes in our lives. In our almost 4 years in spinal cord injury world, the comment we get most often is what an amazing community we have. We are so blessed and try to pass on our good fortune and knowledge to others fighting this same battle.
The boys met their fourth roommate today and they all seem like a perfect fit. I put a wood block on top of their refrigerator that a dear friend gave Hunter on his graduation day. It quotes Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you." I couldn't think of a more fitting verse for them to see every day. Keep them all in your prayers as they begin this new journey!!!

Check in is complete! We'll continue to move Hunter, his cousin and a friend into an accessible campus apartment this weekend. It felt so strange to leave them for their first night of independence. I had tears all the way home! My sweet, amazing AOTT sorority sisters from MTSU got together and made a Welcome basket for the boys full of snacks, giftcards and MTSU gear. It meant so much and helped us all feel safe and welcome. Thank you so much friends!!!😘🌹Tomorrow we'll finish moving in and attend Convocation. I thought this moment might never happen after Hunter was injured. I am so, so happy for him and so very proud!
Hunter is now #trueblue.

We are so excited to announce that Hunter has received an up to $10,000 college scholarship from the Southern California based organization called Swim With Mike that is specifically for physically challenged athletes. We learned of this organization almost 2 years ago from a couple of fellow SCI families and have been beyond impressed from the moment we read their Mission Statement..."To provide financial resources for advanced education that pave the way for physically chal...lenged athletes to overcome their tragedies and realize their full potential." Not only do they provide funds but will also give Hunter mentorship and accountability along the way. They started with a story and community support much like Hunter's. They have now raised over 18 million dollars in 36 years, supported 199 college scholarships at 97 different schools with 60 total sports represented. We submitted Hunter's application back in October and I wasn't even sure they would consider us all the way in Tennessee! We plan to represent them proudly and help support and bring resources like this to injured athletes in our area. We are so excited! To learn more about Swim With Mike, how they were founded and what they do, check out their newest newsletter...

Hunter will be receiving the Courage Award at the Tennessean Sports Awards shortly. I'm going to attempt a Facebook live video so keep watching.

This Tuesday, June 6th, Hunter will be the recipient of the Kaia Jergenson Courage Award at The Tennessean Sports Awards that will take place at TPAC. The guest speaker will be our own Titans QB Marcus Mariota. This is an incredible honor because Kaia has triumphed over unforeseen circumstances just like Hunter. In 2000 Kaia was a freshman basketball player for Lipscomb when she was hospitalized and almost lost her life to meningitis and ultimately lost both her legs and seve...ral fingers. She persevered and returned to school and her team as manager. She's now a successful mommy and pharmacist!
Tuesday will also be Hunter's first day of orientation at MTSU...it's going to be an exciting day! Below is the YouTube link to the full video played as Hunter received his award last week at The Wilco Awards.

I'm so proud of this kid. I haven't been able to stop crying in the last 24 hours!
"Yet those who WAIT for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will WALK and not become weary." Isiah 40:31
This was a verse we have plastered everywhere since our beginning days at Shepherd. It gave me chills that the class president chose this verse in her speech right before the diplomas were handed out. My mom and... I just looked at each other and smiled. God is so good.
The message is simple. Have faith ALWAYS, set your goals high and NEVER give up. Believe in yourself. Hunter is so young and has been through so much, but I believe so much of his story is still unwritten. Thank you all so much for your continued and undying support. It has taken a village for sure!
