'Guten Tag! :D

Another update incoming for all of you. The main task over the last days/weeks was just plain stupid filling and sanding until the surface of Wheatley's inner sphere was smooth enough to get covered in a few layers of white paint.

All this tedious sanding just to be followed by adding random scratches and damages all over the surface and going ham with the Dremel :)

I'm REALLY satisfied with what the outcome looks like altough I missed some areas when looking at the images now. However the next update (hopefully this weekend) will include some motorized action on Wheatley's face :D

Stay tuned for more guys!!

Little update for all of you! My printers have been printing nearly 24/7 over the last couple of days and so yeah... big progress has been made :)

I will do a short explanation later one.

'Hey guys! Really sorry for the lack of updates :(

I spent most of the time in the last few weeks on refining all the 3D parts I made before starting to actually print them.
Since I wanted to make sure I had thought of every single detail, no matter how small it may be, some time passed by and yeah... :)

However, my 3D printers are running 24/7 now and I'm getting ready to start actually building Wheatley. All the electronics are ordered and sorted out. Remote controlling is the last big task but that should be a major road block either.

I shot a few images today to keep you up to date on the progress :) As you can see I started with Wheatleys base and the inner shells.
The ring/circile/bucket inside is basically the main element everything attaches to. The while spherical parts are the inner shells of him. They will act as guides for the eye to move around in.

Might look like nothing special but I will make sense later on. I will do my best to keep the updates coming on a regular base from now on :)

Hope you're doing fine everyone!! :D

I did a quick and very bad (haha) video of the mask for you guys since there were so many requests telling me to do so. Since I'm absolutely NOT into video making/editing you will have to forgive me :( Also I forgot to mount the metal frame on the backside... Whatever... hopefully you can enjoy the video anyway! Let me know what you think! :)

Hey! :)
I finally was able to make a video on the first movements of Wheatley. The current progress is amazing and I cannot wait to show you guys more.

This video covers the controlling of the eye including the previously shown equalizing effect. The next step is to make the eyelids open and close and Wheatley's "face-ring" rotate :)

...

Cheers everyone!!

Hey everyone! :)

Just a short video of the equalizing effect in Wheatley's eye. I'm still fooling around with the timings and it's not ready as of yet. A bigger update will come tomorrow as I hopefully get the eye corpus ready. Enjoy :)

Just a quick note to keep all of you in the line of what's going on in the process of making Wheatley come to life.

Currently working on the eye mechanism and trying to figure out how make his eye lids open an close :)
The inner part of the eye can be moved in every direction and will be a housing for 15 RGB-led arrays which will get hooked up to Wheatley's sound board to act as an equalizer (VU meter) as he speaks.

...

In the meantime I'm designing the damanged look of the glass in Photoshop. How it all comes together will be shown in the next update :)

Thanks for checking out guys! <3

Just a quick note from my side as there won't be a special update today.

I've been listening to you and changed the sidepanels of Wheatley in order to make them flip open and shut.
This will so much by expressing even more emotion and now I wonder why I didn't come up with that in the first place.

...

You guys are awesome! :) Thanks a lot!!

Working on the model right now to hopefully present you a bigger update this week. Stay tuned!

Another update incoming guys! :)

Since all the parts of the first outer shell of Wheatley have been finished printing it was finally time to glue and combine them into one single piece.
This was done using short aluminium shafts which were cut to lenght and glued in place. On the other shots you can see some axial needle cage bearings and the first bunch of motors which arrived :)

...

The parts you can see on the shots are still in their raw condition so a lot of sanding is needed to transform them into one single piece :)

Unfortunately one of you (looking at you Nathan!!) suggested a great idea yesterday which I cannot get out of my head now. He asked me if the side panels of Wheatley are going to tilt open (as seen here: http://s264.photobucket.com/user/aug440/media/wings.png.html).

First of all I wasn't going to do that but it's stuck in my head now. With this movement in place there are some serious problems with the upper and lower bar rotation but I'm sure I can figure that out ;)

PROJECT: ANIMATRONIC WHEATLEY

Hi everyone! :D

Since I’m finished with my Gravity Gun replica I’m starting a new project because it feels it would be the right time to try out some new things I learned in the near past. And by that I mean motorizing stuff by using stepper motors, servos, drivers and all of the controlling which comes with it.

...

That gave me the inspiration to start on this very project, a completely animatronic version of Wheatley, the humorous robotic sphere you definitely know if you ever got to play one part of the Portal series by Valve.
Back when I worked on the Gravity Gun I already started drawing all kinds of sketches to give me an idea how I could tackle the project at best. Wheatley isn’t a quite difficult character to construct when it comes to his overall shape but the challenge definitely lies in working out his internal mechanics :)

I have studied Wheatley’s behavior quite a bit and came to the conclusion that a few of his moves are impossible to recreate while keeping the inside clean and not having it stuffed with mechanical parts, gimbals, gears and motors.

Luckily some awesome guys over at The Replica Prop Forum were such a great help on the overall project by providing me with detailed views of Wheatley’s model from the game which ended up in being the best blueprints I could ask for :) @Fishbowl, if you ever happen to read this: thanks a lot! :)

After weeks of thinking, trying and fooling around I came up with a mechanism which will hopefully fit perfectly inside Wheatley without compromising in variety of his movements too much.
It’s not yet done to 100% but I’m so hyped for this project so I couldn’t wait any longer to get it started. I’m sure a few things will change while working on it but basically the main stuff is done already.

What will be possible function-wise is as follows:

• Moving the eye-corpus 25° in every angle possible from its original position.
• Moving the eye-pupil 15° in every angle possible from its original position.
• Moving eye-lids independently from fully open to nearly fully closed.
• Rotating the “bucket” in Wheatleys backside around 40° to the left and right.
• Moving Wheatleys front bars on the top and bottom independently to get even more expression.
• Having a proper sound module embedded to bring Wheatley to life and add personality.
• Controlling Wheatley via a self-build remote & app.
• Voice regonition.
• Using Wheatleys “flashlight”-function as seen in-game.

As Wheatley is quite complicated to build by hand and 3D printing is a thing now I decided to have most of its parts printed! For that I bought myself a small 3D printer, the Wanhao Duplicator i3.

Starting with the outer shells I will update the progress tomorrow showing you exactly that :)
Hope you guys are excited to this project come alive.
If there are any questions, throw them at me! :)

Cheers and thanks for reading/checking out. Stay tuned for tomorrow!

Guys! VALVE hit me up!

I got an email from Valve in my inbox saying they liked my replica and offered me at the same time a little present in form of a NECA Gravity Gun they had kept back in their storage room.

So I could compare my model to the one they came up with in collaboration with Neca toys.

...

Just had this delivered to me! I'm so hyped they even got to me :)

I'm currently working on my new project which will be posted tomorrow! Hope all of you are doing great! :)

GUYS! Thank you ever so much for your incredible support in sharing the images all around the interwebs! It's really a pleasure to see the page coming to life again after quite a long pause :)

Due to your sharing something incredible happened which I did not expect in the slightest! Can't yet tell you though, but that should be change in a few days ;) You will be amazed!

I'm currently in the progress in setting up a video for you to see the Gravity Gun in action! This should... give you an even better insight of how the illumination is actually working and looking.
Pressing the little red switch besides the rear handle makes the LED's cycle through a bunch of patterns, from excessive pulsing/breathing to a much smoother and more relaxing light show which makes this a perfect night light! :D

And again, I joined Twitter and Tumblr! If you ever feel checking them out and/or following me, please feel free to do so as I will keep everything updated the same way :)

CRAZY!! Can you believe it's been over two years after I finished my wooden replica of Majora's Mask. Time flies by so fast...

And oh yeah, by the way. If you're active on Twitter or Tumblr and want to stay updated, I've joined both of them after refusing for quite a while :)
So if you ever feel checking, please go ahead as I will keep everything updated the same way!

You guys crazy!
I'm still overwhelmed by all the amazing feedback I got from all over the world to my post yesterday :)

Thank all of you ever so much for sharing my excitement for this project as it really does mean the world to me.
I decided to upload a few shots in the upcoming days explaining a little bit of what's going on in them exactly and how things are done.

...

Hope you like the idea since I wanted to give you a little bit more insight since I received quite an amount of messages asking all kinds of stuff regarding the gun.

All of the illumination is done by using Adafruit Industries incredible NeoPixel led-strips and -rings. Each of the orange crystals have a strip of 18 leds embedded underneath them which are all controlled via two Arduino's (basically micro-controllers).
The barrel got a 24-led NeoPixel ring sitting in the back slowly pulsing in the frequency of the crystals. Basically every need of light in this project got tackled by using those very leds, including the gauge in the back and the three little leds sitting in the frontal arms.

Video showing it all in action will be coming soon :) Working on it already! :D If there are any questions please feel free to address them in the comments.

She's done! FINALLY! :)

After nearly half a year I was able to finish up the Gravity Gun and take some eye-candy shots at an old facility last week. I would have loved to upload earlier but a heavy cold came in the way haha.

At this point I sincerley want to thank every single one of my awesome friends ever so much who were there to support this project with their sweat and time. And of course my amazing girlfriend who tried her best to stay calm even I had some serious moo...d swings in the last weeks before finishing it up :)

However I will upload some images from now on every day to give you guys an detailed look at every aspect and in every corner of this replica.

Thanks also for your incredible support although it wasn't really that Zelda related! I hope you enjoyed this build as much as I did! :)

Hey guys!! :D

Sorry for the long delay but it has been quite a busy time lately and I had quite a lot things to sort out.

Here's probably the last update of this project before I'm going to finish it up and call it a day, or half-a-year in this case. ...
The main points which are left to be done is actually just hooking up all the cables and LEDs to their appropriate ports on the microcontroller, finish up the three arms in the front and paint/distress all the yet untouched areas and surfaces :)

In the attached image you can take a look at the illumination once again and a few of the details I had added along the past days. For more in-depth info I'd recommend you visit my worklog on The Replica Prop Forum: http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=239884 to check out even more.

Thanks a big ton for your nice comments and messages in regard to my last update, so glad that you enjoy this :)
