Question: Why is it called so?
Answer: As stated in the book's first section at purelanders.com/passport , 'As a skilful means to spur interest, this handy book is titled "The Pure Land Passport" – not because it is really required for entry into Pure Land'. Hopefully, interest in the book will lead to interest in more sincere learning and practice of the Pure Land teachings.

Answer: As above, it can be read free fully online. Question: Why is it also sold?
Answer: Researching, translating, editing, writing, designing, printing, storing, posting (for local and overseas readers who cannot pick it up in person) and transporting of books require much time, effort and cost. Yet, the book as above, is also available free in hard copy during relevant classes and occasions when funding is adequate. This is while the free soft copy is already online since 2015. On this, the Eighth Patriarch Of The Pure Land Tradition Great Master Lianchi (净土宗八祖莲池大师) has this serious admonition to share - 'Herein, there is a person, who in a day speaks ten thousand words, to slander ten thousand Buddhas, accumulating fully so for one thousand years. This person's karmic misgivings are immeasurable and boundless. Yet again, there is a person, who speaks one evil word, slandering that there is no Pure Land, which obstructs people from practising mindfu...lness of Buddha [Amituofo]. This person's karmic misgivings surpasses the previous person's by a hundred of thousand of ten thousand times, even up to that incalculable. Why is this so? Numerous as motes of dust, all Buddhas praise the Western [Pure Land of Amituofo], only desiring everyone to accomplish Buddhahood, yet you alone gives rise to slander, which is to slander Tathāgatas [Buddhas] everywhere as numerous as motes of dust, trapping and harming sentient beings, who thus constantly sink in the sea of suffering, and not attain accomplishment of Buddhahood.'
('于此有人，日出万言，以谤万佛，积满千岁，是人罪业无量无边。而复有人出一恶言，拨无净土，阻人念佛，是人罪业，过于前人百千万倍，乃至无算。何以故？ 微尘诸佛，赞叹西方，惟欲人人成佛，汝独生谤，即是遍谤微尘如来，陷害众生，常沉苦海，不得成佛。')

[As] misgivings from [the] mind arise, [one] should [with the] mind repent, [as the mind with misgivings] if eradicated, [is] when misgivings also perish. [With] misgivings perished [and the] mind [with misgivings] eradicated, both entirely emptied, [this] is thus named as true repentance [and] reform.

(Of course, there should also be personal verbal or written apologies, with physical remedial actions for mistakes made, where possible. Sincere reciting of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's Verse For Repentance, as below, followed by more practice of mindfulness of the name of [Amitābha] Buddha [i.e. Āmítuófó] can also express true repentance, as we practise mindfulness of Āmítuófó's exactly because we know we have misgivings, and that we need to purify ourselves.)
忏悔文
我昔所造诸恶业，皆由无始贪嗔痴，
从身语意之所生，一切我今皆忏悔。

Verse For Repentance

Among other lessons, there were two important skilful means shared, on how to encourage the elderly and less learned in Buddhism to Nianfo -
[1] Urge them to Nianfo sincerely for benefiting THEIR deceased loved ones (i.e. ancestors), such as their own parents, with merits accumulated and dedicated for their well-being.
[2] Urge them to Nianfo sincerely for benefiting THEIR descendants, such and children and grandchildren, with the aspiration to reach Pure Land, so as to be ab...le to continue looking after them, without forgetting their past life connections.
As the elderly are often more concerned about family members than themselves, the above ways to motivate, by 'looking backwards' (to care for the deceased), and by 'looking forward' (to care for the living) can be very useful. Amituofo
