Congratulations to Community Police Officers Greg Mar and Jim Whedbee on receiving the "Extra Mile Community Award" from Quincy Community Action Programs, Inc. (QCAP) last night.
“The City of Quincy’s commitment to community policing is a wonderful example of its dedication to its neighborhoods. Assigned to the Southwest Quincy/Brewer’s Corner neighborhood, Officer Jim Whedbee checks in at QCAP’s Southwest Community Food Center when on duty. He talks with clients and always h...as a police badge sticker handy for the young children. His presence is a comfort to the neighborhood and its residents, as well as the staff and volunteers at the Food Center.
What distinguishes Jim and fellow community officer Greg Mar is their genuine interest in helping those in need. The Food Center has difficulty finding regular volunteers to cover the early morning shift on Fridays, which entails unloading our weekly food delivery from the Greater Boston Food Bank. Officers Whedbee and Mar responded to our plea for held and faithfully arrive on Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m. to do the heavy lifting. They have unloaded, stacked, and organized more than 6,000 pounds of food. They make food order bags, sort donated food items, break down boxes, and help clients out with their groceries. Jim has also encouraged others to volunteer including his own children.
Officer Jim and Greg always go the “Extra Mile,” and their dedication to QCAP clients and the Food Center is commendable.” - QCAP

On Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Quincy Police Department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 17th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Bring your pills for disposal to the Quincy Police Department, 1 Sea Street, Quincy. (We cannot accept liquids or needles/sharps, only pills or patches.) The service is free ...and anonymous, no questions asked.
Last fall Americans turned in nearly 460 tons (more than 900,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at more than 5,800 sites operated by the DEA and almost 4,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 16 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in almost 11 million pounds—nearly 5,500 tons—of pills. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else’s medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
On Sunday, February 10, 2019, Quinn was celebrating his 3rd birthday. The very next day, he became very ill and was admitted to Children's Hospital in Boston. Medical exams and tests resulted in the discovery of a large mass in Quinn's brain. In less than 24 hours, his family was rocked by the news no family wants to hear, Quinn had a brain tumor and was suffering from brain cancer.
On Monday, April 29th, members of the Quincy Police Department will be shaving their heads to... raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation and to show Quinn that nobody fights alone.
