Velvet STEEL / Interview and Song on CD in FIREWORKS MAGAZINE / issue 78 Apr-Jun 2017 / www.rocktopia.co.uk / by Nicky Baldrian with ROB the voice of the STEELE...Rs

From Germany, Dachau and Bavaria, we find excellent blues rockers VELVET STEEL who have a new thirteen track CD out now called 'Thunderous Rain' that runs in at just under fifty minutes long and is the band's fourth album.
Velvet Steel are pretty wide spread across the globe with their roots in Germany, the guys are Rob Steiner - lead vocals, Will Jones - drums & percussions, John Hammond - drums & percussions, Markus Schmid - bass guitar Jerry Kimbrough - lead- & rhythm-guitar and Tina Puck - backing vocals.
Like most of all musicians in Germany singer Rob Steiner started in school learning to play the flute. He found that quite boring and after a while he started to learn classical organ and keyboards. After that he played keyboard and sang in school band, made music with some friends until they told him to stop playing and just keep on singing. So I started to take classical vocal coach lessons and sang in different cover rock bands until I became the front man of Velvet STEEL in 1993," he tells me.
Robert's main influence is The King. "Yes - Elvis - the one and only king since I was a child. But I'm also a big fan of some more fantastic bands like Bon Jovi, Billy Idol, The Eagles, The Georgia Satellites...just to mention a few. I've seen them all live in concert several times ...except and so sad of course my biggest vocal idol Elvis," he smiles. Robert had lots of inspiration and fun workin' on 'Thunderous Rain' with the main focus to get back to his roots. "It's so exciting and a great honour to work with so many fantastic songwriters and musicians around the world and some cradles of music like Nashville, Memphis and so on. It's only Rock 'n' Roll but I like it," he smiles.
Outside of music Robert is one of the greatest USA fans and regularly goes out there on road trips. "Especially Las Vegas, sometimes I feel like I was born on the wrong continent. Since 1993 I travelled around almost all US states," he explains. "But every time when I come back to my 'diamond of the desert' (that's also a song on the 3rd STEELERs album 'not easy to handle') it feels like I'm comin' home! It's my favourite town in the world, I've been married there and it gives me lots of inspiration and creativity for my songs and my music," he adds.
Velvet Steel started out as a rock-cover band in 1993 but soon they realised that they had to make their own songs to express themselves and get satisfied. "Of course that's the intention of every band," he says. "But maybe it's the wide range and variety of styles in our music from blues, rock 'n' roll, and blues rock up to modern country - simply from soft to hard.
Just to excerpt only one press comment here for a description of the band and their music," he explains. With Velvet Steel live their power-loaded stage-show begins to play, a colourful mix of 'steel-hard' rock music and 'velvet' ballads packed with plenty of blues heads over the stage, their fans can’t be stopped anymore. "Don’t get frightened if the drive goes immediately into your legs, you start singing along and
the beat pervades your body. Only residual risk: You become a 'STEELER's' fan," he smiles.
The new album 'Thunderous Rain' is the bands long awaited fourth album. "Seven years after our last studio album 'Not Easy to Handle' we're literally back with our musical thunderstruck," champions Robert. "The sound of the band - after twenty three years of band history - is still distinctive, even if this time it's a bit less velvet nor extreme hard as steel like some of our other songs before," he says. It is the first time that an album has not completely been written and composed only by Velvet Steel members, this time many international songwriters and composers joined the band with their great work. The album is very contemporary, melodic but in a familiar STEELERs-style. Thirteen brand new blues-rock-songs flavoured with a well dosed hint of country and rock 'n' roll goin' straight in your ear and legs. "We guess all our fans and friends of handmade rock-music will be satisfied with our new album," he adds.
The song writers and composers on this album are from all over the world the tracks have been recorded in studios in the UK and the US and finally in Germany where all parts where compound together and mixed and mastered. "The whole process from finding the perfect song writers and choosing the right songs for us to the point of recording, mixing and mastering took about four years but it was so much fun and a great experience to work with so many talented and successful friends all over the globe," Robert explains to me.
Since Robert is a very joyful and lucky guy there are always funny and amusing moments in the bands musical adventures. "If you don't have fun with your music or whatever you do in your life, its better you quit! But one very funny and heart-melting moment at the same time was as I travelled to Elvis' grave at Graceland in Memphis and brought him the first STEELERs album 'Explorer 2205'. That was one of my burning desires in life to give Elvis a little peace back for what he gave to me and my life with his wonderful music and fantastic voice. After that the press wrote about us: 'At the moment Rob put the CD on Elvis' grave the girls began to scream and cry - it's not quite sure if it was because of the CD gift or the death of Elvis'. Well, if you wanna hear my opinion, that's NO question and there's no more to say," he smiles.
The guys are working on another new album and there might be a new tour to celebrate STEEERS 25th anniversary in 2018. "Maybe there'll be a best of album to celebrate our anniversary too, we'll see, there're lot of possibility's for us in the near future to have fun with us and our friends and fans! We're very thankful to all of them who kept the faith and friendship to us and in our music. We have to say 'thank you and rock on with us guys," Robert concludes.
