Our roadtrip through the land of giant donuts, muffler men and magic kingdoms has finally been released! In the shadows of old Route 66 gas stations and the faded glory of shuttered Salton Sea motels we found there’s still gold in the Golden State.

Ladies and Gents, grab your picnic baskets, don your Wayfarers, find a map for Route 66 and head west. The new Raygun Ballet album is being mastered and made ready. Here's a taste:

  9. Kind words from Bert Strolenberg at Sonic Immersion:

Raygun Ballet is the persona of Los Angeles based creative director John-Mark Austin, whose name some may remember from Immersion Theory’s excellent space album release "The Icarus Foray".

Its music though is a different story: it focusses on downtempo and IDM, and if you’re familiar with the quality music releases of the French Ultimae label,... one will find out there are various similarities to be found on the strange but fascinating world made up by "World That Wasn't". The latter is dedicated to the relentless pursuit of naivete. In terms of instrumentation, Mellotron, Theremin, vocoders and laboratory sinewaves all make frequent appearances, next to acoustic guitar, Gregorian chants, plaintive vocal wails, electronic glitches and hypnotically pulsating beats.

The tracks itself feel a bit like a collection of short stories, taking a peculiar and different sonic highway compared to the vast cosmic journey displayed on "The Icarus Foray" (although both, according to the composer, chronicle a sort of transcendence). If I had to pick any highlights from the 51-minute recording, I’d choose "Sparky’s Theme", the evocative "A Prayer for Mercy" and the tantelizing "Bursting Eden".

All in all, the cinematic and profound nostalgic sounding "World That Wasn't" is your personal invitation to a 1950′s sci-fi scene, offering an attractive opportunity to make up onces own flights of imagination into a feel-good world long gone by.
