“AIN’T WHAT YOU DONE LOST – IT’S WHAT YOU GOT LEFT...”

With these words, U’Dean Morgan, the main character of my one-woman show, "Slut Energy Theory – U’Dean" establishes the crux of her harrowing story, her worldview and a working template for life in general.

Even after a successful run off-Broadway last fall, U'Dean hasn’t changed one iota.

"You gonna like me", she says. And it's true!

Now once again, she reaches “down into the ground, where darkness and decay is at” to bring her truths to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for one night only.

Nearly all of us have been touched by homelessness: either through personal experience, the experiences of those we know through work or school, or seeing someone homeless on the street.

November 16-24th marks National Hunger and Homelessness awareness week. The wonderful people at the National Coalition are doing everything they can to raise awareness about this important cause. Please take a minute and read through the below and see what you can do to learn about events happening in your community.

~Rene Marie

The National Coalition for the Homeless is determined to fight hunger and homelessness, the most extreme expressions of poverty, until they no longer exist. National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week is an opportunity for us all to work together to understand the enduring nature of poverty and to enact the systemic policies necessary to change the course of hunger and homelessness.

Here are ways to get involved:

•	Register events you have planned, find an event in your community, and learn more about Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week: www.nationalhomeless.org/about-us/projects/awareness-week/
•	Follow NCH on Facebook (www.facebook.com/NationalCoalitionfortheHomeless) to answer and share trivia questions about homelessness this week.
•	Join the Facebook event (www.facebook.com/events/590250311016686/) to share your photos, blog posts, or thoughts on issues impacting hunger and homelessness.
•	You can also follow us on Twitter (@Ntl_Homeless and @HandHWeek) to stay up to date with the latest information about the week and stay connected with participants across the country using the hashtags #HandHWeek or #NHHAW.

SURRENDER
Stop struggling for a certain result
Let go of efforts to control the behavior/speech/life of others
Stay true to myself, stand up for what i believe - without being attached to any particular outcome
Connect to my higher, knowing, universal self
Doors will open in both my inner and outer worlds...
Are you worried today? Is your heart ill at ease? Go outside tonight and talk to the stars. They have known you since your birth. Tell them what they, in their silent and boundless wisdom, already know about you. Take your time in the telling. The stars sparkle brighter as they listen to a heart unburdening itself. There is nothing more they would rather do than listen to what you have to say.

H...ave you no words for what you are feeling? Unlock your heart and let it spill forth from there. It is a better form of expression for the stars anyway. But don’t expect them to answer. No. Their express purpose is to listen to your laughter and outcry and feel your pain and joy. You will have many things to say. Don’t rush. Savor the undivided attention the stars afford. They love detail and tangential thought processes.

When once you have finished, and you think there is nothing left to say, stand quietly and wait. Now the stars are sending your heartspeech to the universe. As you wait, the earth you stand on will begin to weep. Remembering what it bestowed on you at your conception, it weeps for 1) that which has just come from within you and, 2) the knowledge you are about to receive. Do not be embarrassed for the earth as it weeps – be silent and let it cry out in trebled anguish and moan in basso profundo. The only comfort it needs from you is your presence and silent acceptance of its tears.

As you accept the weeping of the earth, do not be alarmed at the quiet and powerful expansion of your heart at this time. It is only the universe sending its answer to you on the wind. Turn and face it. Open your eyes, your mouth, your nostrils. Breathe in the knowledge being sent to you. The knowledge that will feel right and familiar. The knowledge that was there inside you all along, but which the universe has now validated for you. Breathe it in deeply. Let it do its work. Let it fill every crevice in your soul.

When you are full, the earth will ask something of you. Before you leave, the earth needs your tears poured onto it so its work and the work of the universe can be complete. Empty the tears you have onto its breast. You will want to deny that you have any tears. But it will not be true. Because you have many, many tears. You have all those tears you held back when it didn’t seem like it was the right time, or for the right reason, or with the right person. Cry those tears. Pour them out now for the sake of your soul…which is the earth…which is the universe.

When once you have emptied your tears upon the earth, face the wind again and let it gently swaddle your heart for safekeeping. For it knows your heart is tender and gentle and compassionate and cannot take much more pain.

You are loved…

thank you, maya angelou, for giving black girls and women strength to rise and wings to fly. rest in peace...
the last gig of our spring tour went off with a bang last night at Spoleto in Charleston SC. sometime during the middle of last night's set, i stood on the stage, overcome with awe and gratitude that i had somehow managed to align myself with such open, honest, giving and bodacious musicians. whatever paths i had to travel, whatever doubts, fears and challenges i had to overcome, or dark nights i had to endure, i would do it all over again - twice more! - to be up on that stage with those musicians. thank you, wycliffe, quentin, etienne, kevin, adrian and elias!!
What is your 1st memory of singing? tell the story: age, location, what the song was, how you felt, what was your body doing, who was listening? what was their response?
Had awesome gig last night at "The Side Door" in Old Lyme, Ct. Tonight thru Sun: Tribute to Eartha Kitt @ Dizzy's - with horns!!
Remember back in the day when, if you wanted to watch TV, you went to that one person's house in the neighborhood who had one?
Suppose it was like that today with live jazz? Suppose every 4th Sunday, for instance, so-and-so has live jazz at her/his house. Nothing fancy, no cover charge, no paid musicians, everything acoustic (except a small amp/mic for vocals), we just bring our musical gifts and... instruments, er'body else bring a chair and some gift of food to share. we re-learn how to play/sing softly and LISTEN to each other. we require our children to LISTEN respectfully. THIS, in my opinion, is the antidote to the bizarrely competitive, yet sterile, plasticity that passes for music these days. we bemoan the closure of jazz clubs and jazz radio stations, but THIS is the way to resurrect jazz in our communities. i'm just sayin'...

There will always be people who will try to define you and then demand that you live up to their definition. Once we get past the pain of that, we are able to look back and realize they have been our best teachers. In the meantime, just keep seeking your own truth, that one true note that has resonated within you since your birth - the rest will follow in time...
