Hi everybody. I'm Tim Phillips representing Minnesota and we just finished up a powerful and emotional day to our facilities our order border patrol agents in this extraordinary group that joins me we are Democrats and we are Republicans and came down here not as partisans but it's representatives And as mothers and fathers and aunts and uncles and human beings and we can just come here to bear witness to the crisis that exists in order we came down here to do something different which was after tour and after seeing what sit down together at the table right next door and spend about an hour and a half talking about stuff and resolve to be the ones that will try to make a difference and set aside Ideology set aside politics and do what we were elected to do and do what this entire country expects us to do and leaves me hopeful I'm one who felt ashamed today shame about a failure of leadership in both houses of Congress Democrat and Republican in the White House and not just this one but I also found hopefulness because I saw it in the eyes of children We saw today optimism hopefulness even some smiles and that's exactly what's gonna feel me and his entire body to do better and I found hopefulness in this group when I ran for Congress, I wanted to work with people like the ones in my right arm. My left literally in temple problems that others said remarkable impossible and this one is because we're better than that this group represents that and we're gonna get to work not just Tonight let me get back to Washington and we will not rest and I just wanna tell you all how honored I am to be a part of a group that is going to get something done overtime So thank you It's my honor to turn over to my wonderful coffee black smoke and thank you all for being here and I just proud to be a part of this group that is really task with looking at some of the problems that we're faced with across the nation and trying to find solutions Talking to one another of finding areas that we can agree upon and solve some of the difficult issues that face with I own a construction company for many years I found that the best way to get the best ideas to improve the company to learn about what was happening is get out on the opposite. We talk to the people who are actually doing the work in some ways I felt like today that's exactly what we did All of us together decided that First hand some had been here before many of us. It was our first time at the border and we want to see first hand what is happening here what are immigration officials important agents are up against with these facilities or plant That's exactly what we did today visiting a multiple facilities and then we got to get we came together for the last hour spoke about some of our key takeaways Our next step we search for solutions I can tell you what some of my takeaways were I was very proud of being down by our toys and vibration officials warm they're going to to care for the people in their custody and to enforce all that party place and it was also sad that they are put in a situation where they have inadequate resources and that's a problem Love Congress making not theirs. They're doing the best they can with the resources that they have and I feel talking to the end of that today we got some real ideas about how we can provide additional resources that they changes to the walls that can make their situation or tangible and will provide better care people who learn coming across the borders now. So I'm looking forward to the ongoing discussion with this group as being said, I hope As well that we can come together and lead the way to find some solutions Well thank you first. I'm Tom Reed. I chair the problem Solvers stocks Republican side with Josh got Heimer on the Democratic side. My New Jersey colleagues who wasn't able to join us today but I just wanted to remind you that the leadership of not only Loyd smoker look inside our Democratic side for putting this trip together and leading on this trip and their team and their offices putting together but the men and women you see Here is responding to the sound of the voice of America that saying I'm not is enough with politics We saw today real human beings In this broken immigration system and as a direct result of their tragedy, their horror their their fear their whole process and these are also the agents not just the the people that are coming here today before these guys are dealing with day out and I just gotta tell you This is congress's fault This isn't Democrats fall This isn't a Republican all we can sit here and continue to play this game of assessing political play, one side or the other So those border agents are gonna continue to suffer in this broken system Those men and women that we stop that are going through that system. We're gonna continue to suffer as they go through that broken system and I just Of the leadership, these men and women are using their position in Congress to step forward but the problem solvers pockets lead the way to say no more It's time of this this broken system So thank you for this boy and not anyone else forgot Question I do wanna say one more thing and this is this is an invitation to everybody in this country Do what we did Democrats and Republicans I found something more important than politics and that humanity in its time It will extend an invitation to everybody in this country to turn off the Tvs for minute and sit down on your phones and reduce your anger Spend some time in someone's life experience These things you do and make greater come from different places like if there's a quick result, grass means that might be just a baby step forward to inspire that in this country Out I'm so honored Express that Y'all call yourself to 12 What are you going to do after you first time you saw what you know these people that are in there and the agents that are taking care of these officers. We saw that we wanted I'll just jump in to say well, I think that this record it was a problem solvers pockets that broke the supplemental money that's flowing here. That was a positive thing we saw some of our colleagues came here a month ago and then come back to 30 days later as a result of what we did we grow that parts of gridlock that was clean that up and get that money immediately So standing together we demonstrated our leaders have been probably now the country that we're serious We're gonna go forward I'm gonna fix this situation as the positives out of my House Be part specifically Nashville Passports belong that legacy difference and we two stands and people here one is for us was required release after 70 - two hours another assignment law which today is that it is not and then another is ensuring that there were Take care of the team so that before we replaced the fact a lot of resources People in their costume is not condition just three ideas What we intend to do over the next weeks and months is continuing this discussion Sound policies even some work down on this last session so we have foundation The set of policies that need others मैं आ गया उसके respect we producing silver stories ah Despair of tragedy throughout the day I think the story that stuck with all of us was history of a woman and three children die walking through the brush Their bodies were found by the agents and that he told us the story story We're doing their bodies children who die on their on their Way to a better life circumstances I'm a mother. I have three children myself and that story really struck home Tragedy is not just a tragedy felt by that woman who hope that she has a different regular kids children tired, but it's tragedy of the circumstances. The tragedy of officers carrying those bodies out in and through our conversations in each of the facilities we visited About identifying all the pieces of the puzzle Fairview we so frequently within Congress or politics or reactive We have abandoned you standing there but we have to look at this is what we talked about all day including our afternoon session is what are the policies and how the policies driving behaviors have policies impacting what we're seeing either way that people are coming here in the how they're Flying reactions that we've seen our law enforcement officers and so understanding how the policy is impacting results for us and getting into cause. That's what we've been exploring all day I think you know it's very premature for us to say this is the three things we came here told you. These are the three consecutive fixed We should listen to us That's not a problem but really is dividing each piece of the problem and I think that's the conversation Because conversations but definitely what do they need when law enforcement officer's name? One of the stories of people coming here but to the hope that exists people who still believe that this place is about we which can you see inspired me for that that we can do so we accept sorry for something that's why Forward from so many college of education therefore this best engage in this beautiful Can you talk about the things that you think are doing One last request says look at this guy is you're a half and retired as well past the age of retirement studio in the shop It one final request tours He asks us to just get the job done and the things that happened. Today's discussion about working on this policy Policy it address the system Stanley fly It is overwhelmed as deep other than wrong when she said If you will die to just about 77 politics if nothing else the gentleman stated well beyond his retirement is and just ask us to fix it When is the next time you all will be discussing this policy that we plan to to fix this so wrong tonight So the problems any distance for two and a half years now and we've worked out well eight years and then formalized half years ago with the mechanism that is no ass today. So we have a working group that's focused on immigration reform as well as the issues that we're talking about here today specifically so I think that's going to continue and as we go forward and we get to those Open black mechanism just for you guys who don't know who we are We will love together We get to 70 - five percent incenses and so we built to a process of listening to each other respect each other and coming up with proposals would support together and so that I think is worth is what we do back obviously, but it meantime members from equally divided 40 - four downs 20 - I know that you are you know people need together but there's a lot of people in Congress that aren't willing to come together the way you all are and willing to come to the Southern border to see what Y'all just saw is there any way that you're gonna talk to them so you guys need to cut the politics out and come to the border and see what we saw and my coach here on the Democratic side on the next week so Melissa Block in Michigan's eighth district in their previous gathers on this trip. So we're heavily represented yeah I think Part of the reason we decided to come down as a group of Democrats and Republicans was to kinda throw away the old mold of just coming down here and using this one way or another of our politics and I think that there is just a moment when you see people who are suffering on every in every chain of the story right? The people who have come from Central America fearing something but people who just wanna come here and work and make a better life The customs Folks who were never trained and never thought to be asking them to do what we're asking them to do right now Everyone is suffering and I think that that the original idea was to just come down and see it together and I think we were all taken with how we have a moral responsibility as well makers to work on this to actually put forward a piece of legislation If our respective leadership isn't supportive of that, it is still our job to try and I think I feel very Strongly that my pure surrounding understand that moral obligation because you cannot look away with what is happening in our country in our name down here. So I think it's it is unusual and it will be tough but that doesn't abrogate our responsibility to do it as what you saw today Change. How did it change the conversation? We're having about how to fix the system had moved forward certainly
