BIG NEWS FOR ALASKA: $46 million from the USDA is on its way to expand broadband in our great state. Alaskans from our cities, rural areas, and Native villages all deserve access to high quality, reliable broadband. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined a light on the urgent need for internet access across our state. At this very moment, countless students are distance learning; working parents may be using the internet to learn new skills to help them succeed in the workforce; and some of our most vulnerable populations are utilizing telehealth services. We must ensure that all communities in our state are connected and empowered to thrive. I am grateful to Secretary Perdue for making these crucially needed investments in Alaska, and I remain confident that high-speed internet access will not only help our families prosper, but prepare our economy to come out of this pandemic stronger than ever before. NEW: I just helped the House pass the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act. I introduced this legislation earlier this Congress, and its passage is good news for our oceans and the vulnerable species that call them home. Every minute, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic is dumped into our ocean. This is unsustainable, and using my position as House Oceans Caucus Co-Chair, I took action to clean up and protect our waters for generations to come. Save Our Seas 2.0 builds on the successes that were previously signed into law with the original Save Our Seas Act, by combating marine debris through improved plastics research and by funding critical infrastructure improvements. Countless Alaskan families earn a living on the water; clean oceans are not just an environmental issue, but an economic one as well. I am sincerely grateful to my friend and Oceans Caucus Co-Chair, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici for fighting alongside me on behalf of marine life. Our Senator Dan Sullivan has been a strong leader on this issue, and I am confident that he will help shepherd this bill through the Senate so that we can send it to the President to be signed into law. Our fellow citizens living with disabilities deserve the same access to employment and economic opportunity as everyone else, and I have been proud to advocate on their behalf for my entire career. This week via Zoom, I was presented with a Distinguished Service Award from the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation in recognition of my support for vocational rehabilitation. As Co-Chair of the Congressional Bipartisan Disabilities Caucus, I am proud to fight for a bright and prosperous future for our fellow Americans, regardless of physical or intellectual ability.

🧊BIG news for Alaska!🧊

Following my advocacy, the United States Coast Guard announced that for the first time since 1984, it will send a U.S. icebreaker, the USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10), north of the Arctic Circle for an 82-day deployment in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. Following the loss of the USCGC Healy's operational capability on August 18th, Alaska was left with only one operational icebreaker.

After we lost the USCGC Healy, I sent a letter to Department of Homeland Sec...urity Acting Secretary Chad Wolf, urging him to consider leasing a U.S. flagged icebreaking vessel to provide icebreaking assistance to the region until the USCGC Healy can be returned to service. By dispatching an icebreaker, the Coast Guard has demonstrated their commitment to the Arctic, and I am proud to have advocated for the Polar Star.

The U.S. is an Arctic nation because of Alaska, and icebreakers are essential not only for keeping our waters safe for mariners, but also for our broader national security needs. I want to thank the Coast Guard for dispatching the Polar Star to the Arctic, particularly as threats from Russia and China continue to grow. Read more: https://bit.ly/31YlqUX
