Today is National Teacher Day. This day honors the many contributions that teachers make on our lives. As a former teacher, I understand the important role that teachers play in educating the next generation. Teachers are part of the backbone to this great nation, and we should all take the time to thank a teacher today.
The month of May is National Barbecue Month. As we move into the summer months, barbecue brings friends and family together to enjoy great food and even better company. The Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District is a great place to enjoy some authentic Texas barbecue. #DontMessWithTexas
Today on May 3rd, we observe the National Day of Prayer. On the first Thursday of May each year, we take this opportunity to pray and meditate as a country. The National Day of Prayer belongs to all Americans, and should be a day where we look past our differences to come together as a nation.
This week, we celebrate Small Business Week. This week recognizes small business owners and entrepreneurs throughout the United States. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, about half of Americans own or work for small businesses.
After the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Trump, small businesses saw some of the most profound benefits. According to the National Federation of Independent Business, small businesses ar...e the most optimistic they’ve been in more than three decades.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act…
- Dramatically improves the way small businesses are treated under the code and has unleashed hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts.
- Creates lower tax rates and a fairer tax code that works hand in hand with small businesses as they grow and create new jobs.
- Improves small business optimism to an all-time high as a result of the historic work the unified Republican government delivered on.
- Allows small businesses to invest more into their people, increase benefits, buy and update new equipment, and create more jobs.

Today, show gratitude by thanking those who have returned from deployment wounded or ill. Share your stories or experiences using #SilverStarService.
On April 21st, 2010, the United States House of Representatives passed H. Res. 855. I was a proud cosponsor of this resolution that made the Silver Star Families of America’s Silver Star Service Banner official and made May 1st Silver Star Service Banner Day.

Earlier this month, I accepted the American Conservative Union Award for Conservative Achievement. This award recognizes those who uphold conservative principles. I would like to thank the American Conservative Union for this great honor.
Now in its 47th year, the ACU Award for Conservative Achievement is bestowed on lawmakers who adhere to President Reagan’s philosophy of the “three-legged stool.” According to the ACU, the votes selected for the recipients of the award reflect how Members of Congress best defend the principles of a free society.

Happy Earth Day! After the inaugural Earth Day in 1970, Congress moved to pass the Endangered Species Act of 1973. This bipartisan legislation overwhelmingly passed both chambers of Congress and was signed into law by President Nixon. This legislation created protections for fish, wildlife and plants facing extinction in the foreseeable future.
In 2015, I was awarded the title of Conservation Champion by the World Wildlife Fund. This great honor was a result of my work to end... poaching of black rhinos and elephants. Today, we should reflect on the achievements we’ve made, while also acknowledging the work ahead. Wildlife conservation has always been a passion of mine, and I look forward to continuing these efforts in the future.

Today, Texas celebrates San Jacinto Day. San Jacinto Day commemorates the decisive victory by General Sam Houston and the Texas militia at the Battle of San Jacinto. On this day in 1836, the Texas militia famously shouted “Remember the Alamo!” while attacking Santa Anna’s Army. The Battle of San Jacinto was the final battle of the Texas Revolution, and Texas soon after gained its independence from Mexico.
I offer my condolences to the Bush family and to the nation in the loss of First Lady and First Mother Barbara Bush. Her graciousness, humor, and love of family were evident to everyone and that is shown in the outpouring of tributes to her family from all who knew her. She had such dignity and such a caring nature. We could all learn much from the way she lived her life.

Today is the last day Texans will have to deal with our old, broken tax code. After the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was passed and signed into law, workers and families across the nation will see these five benefits when filing their taxes next year:
• Lower tax rates for all Americans
• Doubling of the standard deduction
• Child tax credit doubled...
• A simpler process
• Relief from Obamacare individual mandate
By passing this important legislation, Americans in every community are able to keep more of their hard-earned money and use it as they see fit.
Headquartered in the 12th District of Texas, American Airlines has given its employees a $1000 bonus as a result of this landmark legislation. We have to get serious about changing the way money is spent in Washington. I have voted for a Balanced Budget Amendment in the past and was proud to support it again today. Unfortunately, the Balanced Budget Amendment failed to get the two-thirds majority vote needed for passage. Even though it did not pass today, that doesn’t mean I will give up on the fight to control wasteful spending. I will continue working with my colleagues to get our country’s debt under control without raising taxes.
