I am elated that Michael Nguyen, an American citizen wrongly detained, convicted, and imprisoned in Vietnam, has been released by the Vietnamese Government and has returned to the United States, to his family, and to his community. I am amazed by the strength and resilience of the Nguyen family, who have fought so hard to bring Michael home and who never gave up on securing his release. I am also grateful that Michael, despite more than two years in Vietnamese custody, is hea...lthy and doing so well. I want to thank Rep. Katie Porter and her office for the tremendous work they have dedicated to Michael’s case, just as I am proud of the help my office has been able to offer to bring Michael home after all this time. Michael should never have been arrested in the first place and I will continue to advocate for human rights and prisoners of conscience in Vietnam.

While the president yesterday was saying that news coverage of the pandemic should be illegal, his Chief of Staff Mark Meadows doubled down on his own comments over the weekend, reiterating that “We’re not going to control the pandemic.” Without a national testing plan, a national contact tracing plan, or coordinated federal public health guidance--all things this administration has failed to take action on--controlling the pandemic is eminently more difficult. But waving a white flag and surrendering is absurd. This is a complete lack of leadership that has failed the American people.
