Joseph Redington Jr. Named 2018 Honorary Musher -- On Oct. 6, 2017, the Iditarod Trail Committee board of directors unanimously selected Joseph (Joee) Redingt...on Jr. as the 2018 Honorary Musher. Joee passed away in Fairbanks on Aug. 14, 2017, at the age of 74. He was the oldest son of Joe Redington Sr., the “Father of the Iditarod.”

Board President Andy Baker contacted Joee’s wife, Pam Redington, to give her the news. Pam said she and her family were honored and that her husband would have been honored as well.

Traditionally, the Honorary Musher is the first to leave the ceremonial start’s starting line in downtown Anchorage at the corner of Fourth Avenue and D Street. On March 3, 2018, that position will be reserved for Joee Redington Jr.’s wife, Pam. Joee had a long history of competitive mushing, winning the 1966 Fur Rendezvous while he was serving in the United States Army. He placed 12 th in the 1967 Iditarod Centennial Race. Later, he finished the 1974 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in ninth place. He ran the Iditarod one more time in 1975, finishing in third place.

Joee and Pam lived in Manley Hot Springs where they raised their daughter, Heather, and son, Joee Ray. In 2003, 2015, and 2017, Joee Redington was instrumental in transforming the community of Manley Hot Springs into the third checkpoint on the Iditarod Trail when the race restart was moved to Fairbanks due to poor weather conditions.

In 2017, the Manley Hot Springs checkpoint was awarded the prestigious Golden Clipboard award. This award is presented by the Iditarod Trail Committee to the most outstanding checkpoint and Joee Redington played a big role in Manley Hot Springs receiving that award.

...

Sleepy Hollow State Park in Clinton County will offer several two-day snowshoe-building classes at the park’s headquarters from December through February.

Participants will learn to weave traditional wooden snowshoes similar to the ones Native Americans made for generations. These handmade snowshoes can be used for hiking – an easy, inexpensive way to get outside and burn some calories throughout the winter – given as gifts, or used as home decorations.

Class days and times include:

Friday, Dec. 4: 5-9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Dec 5: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (Part 2)

Friday, Dec. 11: 5-9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Dec 12: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (Part 2)

Friday, Jan. 8: 5-9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Jan. 9: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (Part 2)

Friday, Jan. 22: 5-9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Jan. 23: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (Part 2)

Friday, Feb. 12: 5-9 p.m. (Part 1)
Saturday, Feb. 13: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. (Part 2)
Classes are limited to a maximum of eight participants, and reservations are required. This activity requires concentration over long periods of time and is recommended for ages 16 and older. The cost for making a pair of snowshoes is $170, which includes preformed wooden frames, lacing, high-quality bindings and personal instruction.

For more information or to make a reservation, contact Sleepy Hollow State Park at 517-651-6217 or email Denise Smith at smithd8@michigan.gov.

Mid Union Sled Haulers added 2 new photos.

Attention mushing world.
These 2 sleds came off a truck heading to a race on Feb 15. They were traveling on the 131 between Mancelona and FifeLake. Owners have... contacted the police, road commission, Craigslist and a host of others. One is a Risdon pro tracker the other is a Risdon shadow. They did not have sled bags on, but did have snow hooks attached. If you hear anything about these sleds please contact us. These sleds are considered stolen. Thank you.
