Such a special place to just be. To be surrounded by such layered and thoughtful artwork and in the presence of others in contemplative silence...Rothko Chapel is the sort of place that, I believe, is... a foundation for more love, light, and justice in the world. See More

You're walking in Houston and it's really bright and really hot and the cars are going by and there's the usual city hubbub. You go into the Rothko Chapel and suddenly all the chaos stops. Everything ...goes silent. You go silent. You go still. These tall, narrow paintings all around you, at first they look the same, at first they look black, but when you go silent, you suddenly become aware of the moment, you suddenly are in NOW. It is a totally zen experience. Suddenly you are aware that every painting is different, that they are not black, they are luscious berry shading into black, they are like the velvet of a black rose, and all the paintings reverberate off each other, dialog with each other, and reach up, up, like 20 feet to the ceiling. Walking into the Rothko Chapel is a spiritual experience like no other. I was only there once, almost 30 years ago. I will never forget it. See More

Such a beautiful and serene space. Unfortunately, it does not seem like the inside building is properly maintained, particularly in terms of humidity. Houston is very humid and I have noticed a strong... mildew scent inside the chapel the last times I’ve been to visit. Hope they invest in some upkeep and/or humidity remediation! See More

If it wasn't for the solemnity of the place I would give only one star. You sense the presence of greatness and madness. Greatness in that notable spirits have entered the place. Madness in that Rothk...o was quite insane. I went in looking for 15 majestic paintings only to find large black tablets. Upon closer inspection they were painted very dark. In a dark room there are dark paintings. Cue the music from the Twilight Zone. It brings your spirit down. I was happy to walk out into the rain you rinse that place from my soul See More

Children are a part of society, and if they are not welcome at your chapel then it is not, in fact, "open to all people."

The arts play an important connecting role in society in ways that other sectors cannot. Artists can move through a variety of environments using music, performance, visual arts and other media to address difficult topics, challenge cultural stigmas, bring diverse people together, and provoke new ways of thinking that can lead to powerful social and political changes. In a time of censo...

Chapel friends! Note that today's hours are 10am-2:30pm, 4-6pm. Please plan accordingly!

We are deeply saddened by the mass shooting that took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida this week. 17 young people were killed on that tragic day. This is not something to take lightly. It has only been four short months since the massacre at Sutherland Springs, Texas. The number of mass shootings that take place in the United States dwarfs those in other countries around the world.

It is time for us to come together, get to the root of the problem, and reform our laws to create real change so that we may prevent future atrocities such as this. Take action, use your voice, talk to your representatives, find your local gun control organizations, make sustainable change.
