〜Dinner at Cafe NOAH serving fabulously tasty vegetables 〜
This small cafe serves healthy dishes using locally produced vegetables that have been grown without pesticides. This cafe changed my concept of vegetables and made me realize that they are originally sweet like fruits and more tasty!
Rich in nature, San'in region is the fresh food capital!!!

Friday night at the beer garden in Yonago Airport's observation deck. Lots of good food and drinks and a live concert from Hanzo.
In my previous post, I introduced about Tottori’s Iwagaki Oyster. Now it is the oysters’ season! I went to Sakai-port in western Tottori prefecture to taste the Iwagaki Oyster. Located around the center of the coast area of the San’in region, the Sakai-port is known as one of Japan's major fishery bases. If you want to eat fresh seafood, this is one of the places you should go.
This time I chose a restaurant named Kaigan(かいがん). This restaurant located near Sakaiminato Kokusa...i Ryokyaku Terminal (Sakaiminato International Passenger Terminal). I went to the restaurant for the first time, but I sometimes go to the sea terminal and saw the restaurant is always crowded, so I wanted to go there.
I ordered an Oyster lunch set including a raw oyster meat and a deep-fried oyster coated with bread crumbs. It was 2,000 yen. The average price of an oyster meat is more than 600-800 yen at fish markets in Sakai-port. I think it is a pretty good deal. I was out of my mind for a while after eating them because they were so delicious!! It was so smooth and silky in texture with subtle saltiness and some smell of the sea. I have had Iwagaki oysters several times, but it was the best oysters I have ever had! I told that to a woman at the restaurant. She said the restaurant uses fresh caught seafood. In Sakai-port, there are many restaurants serving fresh seafood all year round.
If you want to know more about the summer oyster I had, pls. kindly see my previous post.

〜Iwagaki Oyster, the extreme summer delicacy from the Sea of Japan〜
Japan is an island country, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Sea of Japan on the other. People love to eat seafood, and oysters have been one of the most popular choices. They are often called “sea milk” with high nutritional values containing various proteins and minerals such as calcium and zinc.
The most popular varieties are called Magaki or pacific oysters literally means "real oysters " which... are in season in winter. Talking of oysters, the pacific oysters come first to most Japanese people’s mind as one of popular winter delicacies.
Located along the Sea of Japan, Tottori Prefecture is home to another popular variety of oysters called Iwagaki literally means “rock oysters”. They are larger than the pacific oysters, contrary in season in summer and available in a just short period of time. In Tottori, fishery season for the oyster started on June 1st this year and it will continue until around mid-August. It is almost just two and half months!
They are wild grown and caught by free-diving. Some of them grow to 20 cm (about 8 in) in length and 1 kg (about 2 lb.) in weight. Oysters fished in Tottori prefecture are sold under a brand name of “Nastuki (meaning shining in summer)” Among them, good ones with a shell of more than 13 cm (about 5 in) in length are sold with Nastuki labels. It takes four years for an oyster to grow up to the size to be regarded as Nastuki. They are the extreme Tottori’s summer delicacy nurtured in the Sea of Japan often known for cold north-western wind and rough waves during winter.
This photo is a large one of Natsuki with the brand label. I recommend you to eat this variety of oyster raw with some squeezed lemon poured on top. But you are not a big fan of eating raw seafood, it can be lightly grilled with butter. The taste is rich in flavor and the texture is incredibly soft and creamy. It is something you have never experienced! It also goes very well with Sake, Japanese rice wine. You should definitely try some!!!

In my previous post, I introduced about Gessho-ji temple. I visited the temple to create the post last month. At the time, it occurred to me that I visited there around 5 years ago with a female film director from Belgium and several people for a location scouting of a movie. It was released last spring.
The movie is named “Le Coeur regulier-kokoro(the heart)"staring a French actress, Isabelle Care. The film director was looking for steep cliffs and a man’s house. The man is... a former police man called Daisuke san. After his retirement, he lives near steep cliffs which are famous suicide spot, stopping those who want to kill themselves.
We went on a mission to Shimane Peninsula to find his house and the cliffs. The peninsula stretches around 65 kilometers (40 miles) from east to west and 18 kilometers (11 miles) from south to north along the coast of the Sea of Japan covering the eastern part of Shimane Prefecture. On the peninsula, hills of 200-500 meters (650-1650 feet) are spanning from east to west. The Sea of Japan along the north coast is stunning blue and small fishing villages and old Shinto shrines are dotted on the shore.
We began our project, Finding Daisuke San's House, from the east tip of the peninsula and drove west along the north shore to the base of it in the west end over a couple of days. But, it seemed that the film director had not found what she wanted. After that, she left for Oki islands around 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the peninsula and ended up finding her ideal sites there. Actually, views are more spectacular in the remote islands.
However, I personally enjoyed exploring the peninsula. Looking it from south side, it is just continuing hills covered with trees, but there is a place of exploration and adventure over them.
Below is a web site introducing a pilgrimage tour of the peninsula.

Gessho-ji temple is on the south side of the peninsula and we just stopped by the temple on the way. The film director really liked the place and the temple became one of the filming locations.
Please find the temple in the promotional movie and enjoy beautiful sceneries of Oki islands, too!

〜Gessho-ji Temple in Mastue City ~
Gessho-ji temple (a Buddhist temple) is located in Matsue City. The city used to be the castle town of Matsue domain under Tokugawa shogunate. Japan was ruled by Togugawa shogunate for more than two and a half centuries from the beginning of the 17th century. It was the most powerful Samurai military government in Japanese history. The founder and first shogun, a leader of a shognate, was Tokugawa Ieyasu and one of his grandsons, Matsudaira ...Naomasa, was appointed as a feudal lord of the domain in the early 17th century. He and the next nine generations ruled the domain until the late 19th century.
The temple is the family temple of the Matsudaira family and resting place for the first and the next eight lords. Each lord has a large grave yard with a roofed wooden gate. In the graveyard of the 6th lord, you will find a giant stone turtle with a tall stone monument on its back. According to tradition, the 6th lord loved turtles in his life time. A giant stone turtle was built and placed in his grave yard to mourn him. However the turtle walked around the town at night and attacked people. The monk of the temple was in trouble and preached against its bad behavior. The turtle cried shedding tears and said to the monk, “I know I am an idiot to do such terrible things, but I cannot stop doing it by myself. I will leave my fortune to you.” The monk instructed to put a stone monument inscribed with feats of the lord on the turtle’s back. After that the turtle has never left its position.
To go to the Gessho-ji temple, I recommend you to take the Matsue Lake Line Bus. It is a route bus for sightseeing from JR Matsue station running around the major tourist spots in the town. It departs every 20-30 minute. You can get further details at a tourist information center in front of the station.

Glimpses of Unfamiliar Hanakairo
〜Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park Ⅱ〜
In my previous post, I introduced about Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park. Actually the main features of the flower park are beautiful seasonal flowers, but it has more than that! In this post, I introduce you about other faces of the park.
...Its layout was designed in harmony with the natural terrain and forests. The flower park has a natural forests area. There is a path along a small stream and it is called Furusato-no-komichi, meaning “a path of hometown”. Strolling around the area, you might feel like, you are walking in the woods. The path and stream are between some hills and it’s like a small-sized valley. When I went there in June, I found some lilies are in bloom on one of the hillside.
The lilies are called Sasa-yuri, meaning “bamboo lily” because its leaves look like of bamboos’. They have grown naturally there before the flower park was opened. The lilies are indigenous to Japan and mentioned in Kojiki which is regarded as Japan’s oldest history book written 1300 years ago. The flower grows in from the central to western Japan. In earlier times, they could be seen everywhere in nature, but now it is rare to see them. The area around the hill is a sanctuary for the lilies. Lilies are the iconic flower of Hanakairo honoring the Sasa-yuri lilies.
I really love Hanakairo because it has many faces. It is my secret resort with my annual passport.( ̄▽ ̄*=

~Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park Ⅰ〜
Tottori Hanakairo Flower Park is located at the foot of Mt. Daisen, the highest peak in the Chugoku region. The park covers an area of half a square kilometer, or about 0.2 square miles, which is almost the same size as the Vatican City and one of the largest flower parks in Japan. Its layout was designed in harmony with the natural terrain and forests. In the extensive grounds, you will not only be able to appreciate beautiful flowers but al...so feel the change of seasons relaxing in nature.
Hanakairo literally means a “flower corridor”. It is named after a donut-shaped observation platform with a circumference of one kilometer, or about 3280 feet, which is surrounding the main area of the park. The 1-kilometer round walkway is roofed, so you can walk in the park without putting up an umbrella when it rains or snows.
In the center of the area surrounded by the circular walkway, there is a huge dome greenhouse called Flower Dome with a diameter of 50 meters or around 165 feet. This is the symbol of this flower park. Inside the greenhouse, you will be fascinated by tropical flowers and plants including a thousand of orchids and you might feel like, you are in the tropics.
I personally really love this place enough to purchase an annual passport that is only 3,500 yen. Flowers and views change from season to season, and various events and exhibitions are held. You won’t get bored!
*Shuttle bus service from JR Yonago station is available and it is free of charge. It takes about 30min from the station.
