Sexual violence disproportionately affects gender and sexual minorities, especially trans folk. These statistics come from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and it is important to recognize that there are several barriers to collecting data to represent already underrepresented communities.
Continuing with our focus in SAAF Youth Prevention to look at celebrity stories this week, the Youth Life Project is taking a look at the current events involving Kesha and her producer, Dr. Luke, who reportedly physically/emotionally abused and raped her for 10 years. This week a federal judge denied her plea to have her contract voided.
"It's scary that a judge felt obligated to deny the motion to release her from her contract with Sony in spite of allegations that her long...time producer Dr. Luke repeatedly sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused her (allegations he has denied). It's scary that our court system does not seem to be able to meaningfully weigh such claims in making its decisions. It's scary that we could live in a society that would essentially make a woman choose between her career and her sense of safety."
Many fans have rallied behind Kesha with an activist campaign called #FreeKesha. What are your thoughts and feelings?

Here are 6 people who have been open about their struggles and now are able to resist things that are challenging and unhealthy for them. Do you know of any other celebrities not on the list?
