South Georgia right whale project

Here are a few more images as the wild water whales team go into the...ir final days of survey at South Georgia. The team have now dropped off their biological samples at King Edward Point (from where they will be shipped back to the UK as British Antarctic Survey cargo) and are spending this weekend working to the northwest of the island, a place where right whales are often seen and which has been too windy to visit for much of this season. However the team's effort across the island this season has been phenomenal! This map shows the latest update on where the team have been and the species sighted, as well as the latest movements of Annenkov and Braveheart. It truly has been the year of the humpback whale at South Georgia this season! Darwin Initiative South Georgia Heritage Trust Marine Mammal Institute Emma Carroll Mehr anzeigen

A word of grateful thanks to our funders. This weekend, the British ...Antarctic Survey expedition team will return to King Edward Point in order to drop off our biological samples and some equipment and say goodbye, before heading back to Stanley, returning next Friday. It has been an immensely productive season, including two trips around the entire island of South Georgia, >2000km of survey effort and over 500 whale sightings, including over 700 humpbacks! The team were able to collect at least 10 biopsy samples from southern right whales, blue whales (first time ever at South Georgia in modern times!) and humpback whales. They collected whale blow samples, getting around some problems with the UAV by fashioning a petrie dish onto a pole, and even the occasional faecal sample. Overhead images gathered by UAV, as well as copious photo-ID images of the right whales will hopefully tell us more about the whales' health status; three echosounder surveys near to feeding right whales will tell us about the types of prey they are feeding on; and the two whales we have tagged will tell us new things about where southern right whales go in the autumn and winter. We could not have acheived ANY of this without the immense support we have received, from our funders the Darwin Initiative, previously from EU BEST, and latterly from the South Georgia Heritage Trust and its North American counterpart the Friends of South Georgia Island. Without the wonderful visitors who fall in love with South Georgia (as we have certainly done) and donate to the Trust to support the ongoing restoration of both heritage and wildlife on the island, we would not have been able to secure our expedition vessel and assemble such a crack team of experts for this expedition. We are also immensely grateful to our New Zealand vessel R/V Braveheart and their wonderful crew who absolutely bust a gut to make this project happen for us. Finally, we have been able to rely this year and in previous years on the support and good advice of the South Georgia Government officers, for which we are most grateful. Huge thanks to you all, and I am excited for everything we can deliver from the data collected on this cruise. After 3 years of trying to survey the whales of South Georgia in different ways, this year has really delivered. I am going to write a separate post on the excellent wild water whales team in due course! Feeling a lot of gratitude today. There is also (tentatively) another day of good weather ahead, so it's not over yet! Mehr anzeigen

We can now follow the fortunes of our two southern right whales Anne...nkov and Braveheart live in South Georgia to see where they go next! These are the first southern right whales ever tagged on a feeding ground, so we're excited to find out more about their habitat use in the coming autumn, and what areas of the South Atlantic are important for them.
