SPEC has lost a wonderful part of our family today. Sharing prayers and love.
A letter from President Draves.
It is with profound sadness that we reach out to the Graceland family this evening, as we have just learned the hear...tbreaking news of the passing of our beloved colleague, mentor and friend, Brad Carr, Director of Student Activities. Brad has embodied what it means to be a “Gracelander,” and as we all take in the shock of this announcement, we will share in his memory the joy and laughter he brought to us all, as well as his devotedness to the community he embraced, and to us, as friends.
We ask you especially to take Brad’s three sons, Alex (Residence Hall Director, Graybill), Jackson (current Graceland student), and Tim and his wife Natalie and Brad’s grandson Adam into your hearts and prayers this evening and into the days, weeks and months ahead.
Tonight, the Student Life Office will be open at 8 pm for anyone needing support or just wanting to talk. We will work to bring additional opportunities for support through this time of loss, as well as a chance to share in your feelings of gratefulness for a man who gave so much. A future announcement will provide details of such opportunities.
As members of the Graceland family, we are good at coming together in support of one another. It is through this time of grief that we ask each of you to be there for each other and for those you observe may be in need.
Pat Draves Dave Schaal
President Vice President for Student Life, and Dean of Students
The church created a video about us and it turned out fantastic!
SPECTACULAR is a camp dedicated to creating a safe, Christ-centered community where teens can discover God, their inherent worth, and share their giftedness. Check out highlights from SPEC 2017.
Celebrating SPEC's 50th year in 2018, we are so excited to announce our theme! It's a theme that reflects how important it is to hear each other’s stories, to explore ways to connect the church and SPEC to our own stories and to realize the importance and relevance of the sacred story.
Looking forward to seeing you July 21-28!
A timely post from our friend Ben...
It's easy to react. It's easy to be silent. It's easy to hate the hateful. It's easy to stop listening.
Look where that's taken us.
The recent events in Cha...rlottesville (and many other places), are forcing us to ask some difficult questions and seek some difficult wisdom.
But, if we want humanity to become something it’s never become, we’re going to have to do something we’ve never done. Something we’re not good at, something messy, something difficult.
This is not a new idea, but it's a hard one.
Thinking today about one of the things Rachel Held Evans said to us this summer at SPEC... have a thick skin but always keep a tender heart.
If you liked hearing her speak at SPEC, check out her blog for more good stuff.
A SPECTACULAR shout-out from Benjamin and the Free Listening Movement!
We can do more together than we can alone. This group and many more went through a week of listening workshops at SPEC Camp at Graceland University in Lamoni, I...owa. SPECTACULAR With over 1,100 high school students from across the country, I can say with certainty that the future is in good hands. Be hopeful, be encouraged, and keep listening.
