San Diego Humane Society added 12 new photos — with Shanna Hawkins.
For the first time in our 135-year history, we’ve gone global to save dogs and puppies from fates we could barely fathom: being listed on a menu or sold by a grocer. This is an issue we are deeply concerned about at San Diego Humane Society.
Today, 29 dogs destined for slaughter as part of the horrific Korean dog meat trade, found refuge with San Diego Humane Society. Our Special Response Team drove through the night to transport these dogs from San Francisco International Airport after they completed a 14-hour flight from South Korea as part of a Humane Society International (HSI) rescue effort.
These are photos of our Special Response Team transporting the dogs from San Francisco to San Diego. The team said when they stopped for a potty break; they took the dogs out to a field of grass. When they stepped onto the grass – probably for the first time in their lives - they just stood still for a minute, confused by this new experience. Then all of a sudden they all started running, jumping and playing! It’s as if they realized they’re finally safe from harm.
Our veterinarians and animal care staff will spend this afternoon and the coming days conducting exams and caring for the 29 dogs to ascertain their health and wellbeing with the hope of placing the dogs up for adoption soon. We’ll keep you informed on how they’re doing as we know more.
