Preserving LGBT Historic Sites in California

San Francisco: Farewell to a legacy business that had returned to operation in 2014 after a closure that lasted seven years. La Rondalla Mexican restaurant on V...alencia Street at the corner of 20th Street in the Mission District was never a gay restaurant per se, but was a favorite hangout for queer Latinos/Latinas in the 1960s and 1970s.

Into the early 1980s, the restaurant regularly featured performances by Alberta Nevaerez (1940–2002), a transgender mariachi and ranchera singer who went by the stage names Teresita la Campesina ("Teresita the Farmgirl") and Teresita de la Rondalla.

The San Francisco Health Department ordered the closing of La Rondalla in 2007 — and it sat vacant until 2014 as the owners sought the funding to mitigate the health concerns and to completely rehabilitate the space. It reopened under management of the family that had founded the restaurant.

As of the third week of July, the restaurant has closed — to all appearances definitively. A hand-lettered sign is now posted in the Valencia Street window: "Thank you for your patronage. We are closing. God bless you. P.S. Love you always."

If you have stories about La Rondalla — and particularly its meaning for queer patrons — please post a comment below.

BLOG: Trump receives applause at mention of LGBTQ people
by Lisa Keen

It was an odd moment in Republican National Convention history: The nominee of the nation’...s most conservative party thanked the arena filled with the GOP faithful for “cheering for what I just had to say.”

Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump had just said that, “Only weeks ago, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist – this targeting the LGBTQ community. No good, and we’re gonna stop it.”

“As your president, I will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of a hateful, foreign ideology – believe me,” said Trump.

A few in the audience at Quicken Arena in Cleveland had begun to applaud after he said “oppression” but, after he specified “foreign ideology,” the larger crowd roared.
