My first gig in Koln was quite an eventful evening. well, an eventful day really. We travelled over from the UK the day before the show with the int...ention of having the night in Amsterdam. Several times travelling across Europe without accom we found ourselves driving into the early hours of the morning desperately trying to find somewhere to sleep as every place had sold out for 100’s of KMS, and a few times even ended up sleeping on guitar cases in the back of the car! So for this reason we planned ahead, chose Amsterdam as our stop off point (naturally) and went and had a great night wandering the little streets eating things covered in Nutella.
The next day we were sitting around having some breakfast and coffee in the Grasshopper (we did actually go there for coffee..seriously!) and when we went back to the car some men were standing close by and told us a bloke had just smashed our window and grabbed a bag. BUMMMERRR!
This was the second time in a fortnight too. I had my iPad stolen in Lille. This time they took my entire laptop bag which Included my passport, money, some clothes, heaps of memento’s and bits and pieces I really loved, a microphone, toiletries.. Half my life basically…
After the iPad incident I was trying to be more careful. Its fairly hard to do anything right in those situation when your living more or less in the car. If you're not in a hotel room then the car car is the only place you have for your stuff. I had covered my laptop bag with a towel but I have the funny feeling nothings says ‘important expensive stuff’ like a towel over something large in a car.
We spent two or three hours at the Amsterdam police station trying to get stuff sorted but there was nothing we could do about the window. We we’re already running super late to get to Koln. We smashed it down the highway shards of glass still littered all through the car and made it to Koln. Aiming for our show at Die Wohngemeinschaft but slightly missing the mark we ended up way out in the suburbs at the wrong address. Finally we made it to the show about 5 minutes before I’m due on stage. We raced in and the crowed we’re all already in their seats. I threw out a guitar, kick drum and a few harmonica’s and just got on with it. My Sound guy and the promoter managed to stay with the car, completely illegally mounted up on the curb downtown with a smashed window… The promoter was a sweetheart for making that all work us, and the gig went well in spite of everything. Next morning we got a plastic window and we’re on our way.
I’m happy to be getting back to Koln for a slightly more organised performance. I’m playing at Studio 672 on the 29th of September. Tickets available here; http://www.eventim.de/kim-churchill-tickets-koeln.html…
