Skateboarding was introduced to Liberia early in 2017 by Foun...dation for Women CEO Deborah Lindholm. Less than half a year later Liberia will participate in 'Go Skateboarding Day' a worldwide celebration dedicated to the sport which will become Olympic event in 2020.

On June 15th, in the article 'ELWA Academy Skateboard Club Grateful to Tony Hawk, THE OBSERVER' reported at "The ELWA Academy Skateboard Club yesterday expressed appreciation to the Tony Hawk Foundation for the donation of 60 helmets to help build interest in the sport.

"The helmets were presented to the club by the founder and chief executive officer of Foundation for Women, Deborah Lindholm, yesterday during skateboard training at the school’s campus in Monrovia.

"In a video recording, members of the club held a written ‘thank you’ note, and thanked Mr. Hawk for the helmets that would ensure they practice the various tactics demanded by the sport without fear of head injuries. “We thank you, Tony Hawk,” they said in unison."

Noted educator Bill Saa wrote:" The relevance of this project is beyond mere understanding of skateboarding. In my role as trauma counselor with vast experience working in Liberia throughout the period of the civil war on toward now, this project complements and can be a real base for fostering healing and rehabilitation of many young people who are desperately yearning for recovery." (In 2000 William Saa, West Africa Network for Peacebuilding advocate, was awarded Martin Luther King, Jr. Citizenship Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to Liberian society in furtherance of Dr. King's ideals of fostering non-violent social change.)
