The Skye Shepherd Hut was the last place we stayed at on our touring holiday through the Highlands. We'd booked it because it was something different from all the usual accommodation available but did...n't really know what to expect. So glad we found it on "Canopy and Stars" because it certainly was the best of all the all the places we'd stayed at and, what we didn't expect, so comfortable and warm! So warm in fact that the first night we tried to sleep with a slightly opened window but the midges decided to come and join us so closed window for the rest of the holiday. Very comfortable bed with linen bedding, brilliant! A very good choice of breakfast, brought to your door in a lovely hessian bag if it was a continental, an English one was brought to you on a tray, by the lovely landlady Jane. And of course there were Gilbert and George (whom I used to call Sullivan) the donkeys, who like to be spoken to and seem to understand what you're saying and if they keep following you, as they seem to love human company, you just tell them to go. And the cats, one of whom liked to sit with us in the summerhouse, and the chickens one of whom I asked to lay an egg for me, but she just looked at me and walked away, clucking. And the dog, who was happiest following Janet around. Never realised you could put so much in a hut that small, up to the wineglasses and dvd player, and still be so comfortable and have such a good time. We are two old codgers, in our seventies. Amazing place for a long weekend! Janet provided us with everything we needed. Info, books, maps, and breakfast delivered to our hut each morning. The hut itself was fantastic, really quite spacious, ...and super warm and cosy. Beautiful location with cracking views! Broadford is a short drive or cycle away if you need to stock up and make use of the kitchen, bbq or living room back at the hut. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! See More

Travel tip: Flights to Skye - Fly in to Inverness Airport to travel to Skye Shepherd Huts. From the airport you can hire a car and drive or take the lazy train to Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland righ...t by the Skye Bridge. You can fly to Inverness from London Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton, from Amsterdam, Belfast City, Birmingham, Bristol, Dublin, Manchester, Stornoway in the Isle of Lewis in the Western Isles, Kirkwall in Orkney and Sumburgh in Shetland, and there are seasonal flights to Geneva. Amsterdam and Heathrow are of course good for for connections.

Another option is to fly to Glasgow and take the very lazy train direct to Mallaig on the mainland from where you get a ferry across to Skye. If flying into Edinburgh you can take the train to Inverness and change trains there to Kyle of Lochalsh. Glasgow especially and also Edinburgh are of course very good options for flight connections. There is a direct train from London To Inverness and direct trains into Glasgow and Edinburgh.

You used to be able to fly to Inverness from Derby East Midlands Airport, from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Wick and from London Stansted, but it seems not at the moment - these things keep changing, so please recheck for yourself from time to time.

When you are staying at Skye Shepherd Huts, please please do ask about car hire before you come as you really honestly will need a car or a bike. The village of Heasta is very remote and there's no public transport. The single local taxi is very much in demand and it is absolutely imperative that you book. You can walk to Broadford and back if you're fit and you have plenty of time, it's a beautiful walk and all of the locals will always give you a lift if you ask on the road to Heasta. (Rhymes with English "haste", "hey" and "hay".) But you probably don't want to be walking too many times nor if the weather is foul.

Do ask about travel.

This is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places to stay.
The huts are so well thought out with everything you need for your stay and more. The bed was extremely comfortable and the whole place w...as spotless.
It was very cosy with the hobbit stove and this just added to the overall charm of the hut.
Breakfast was delivered to our hut in a basket by Janet and it was delicious, the porridge was amazing with a wee tot of whisky! And the fully cooked fry up was fab!
Janet was a warm and friendly host and nothing was too much trouble. George and Gilbert the donkeys were adorable.
We will definitely be back, just home and missing it already!
Thank you for a wonderful break.

I can't wait to be back here, Janet is a fantastic host and thinks of everything down to a T...even like bringing your yummy breakfast to you in the morning in a cute little basket! The views are fant...astic in the area and the hut was so cosy & came with everything you need. Janet isn't the only one looking out for you though, I had 2 very handsome gentlemen join me to look at the fabulous view from outside our hut; Gilbert & George! I think what Janet has achieved is brilliant and is such a quirky idea. Simply fabulous! See More

Just had the most amazing trip to Skye, staying in the Shepherd huts. Janet kindly looked after Maggie while we went out to our posh tea at Kinloch House. Everyone happy! Trying to hang onto the feeli...ng of watching the sun setting looking over to Rum while cosy in our cute wee cabin. Perfect! The cabin is meticulously set up, spotless and 'breakfast in a basket' a real treat. Even the donkeys friendly! Thanks Janet! See More

Amazingly cosy, quirky and so well equipped - everything has been thought of in these amazing wee huts! With the heated blanket and stove, there's not even a chill in the air and that's in the middle ...of winter! Walking to the house at night for the loo, under a blanket of stars was just pure magic. We cannot wait to return. And we'll be telling all our friends and family they have to book! See More

Had the most magical stay here with my boyfriend last summer. We think of it all the time, and don't know if we will ever be able to surpass that experience. Skye is possiby the most beautiful place I... have ever been, and our little hut was beyond perfect. We woke up every morning to a fresh breakfast basket (tea, homemade gluten free toast and jam, sausages, eggs, and scottish oatmeal with a tiny dash of whiskey) delivered to our doorstep by the lovely, quiet and respectful Janet. We spent our days chasing sheep, exploring ruins, hiking and rambling between sea, mountain, loch and sky! In the evenings we'd find a pub to pass an hour, take a walk on the beach and return to build a fire in our tiny wood stove and snuggle in our scrumptious little bed. This place is truly unbeatable! Thank you, Janet. See More

Our visit to Skye Shepherd Huts was perfect. Janet has thought of absolutely everything to make your stay a 5 star experience. Willie, my black lab was delighted to receive a doggy bag with blankets, ...towels and treats. Breakfasts were delicious and there was nothing better than relaxing in the beautiful surroundings of the shepherd hut with the wood burning stove on. We will definitely be back and will highly recommend Skye Shepherd Huts to everyone. ☺ See More

Our stay was just perfect! Would totally recommend this wonderful, complete and cosy hut to everyone I know. Outstanding location, atmosphere and service. Great host with lovely dogs, donkeys and chic...kens on the property. If we ever return to Skye (which we have to given all the great walks we simply couldn't do in two days), we'll be sure to stay with Janet again. See More

A unique and unforgettable experience! Love the coziness of the hut- it was a warm and homely place to be amidst nature and chilly weather. Janet was a lovely host. Had a wonderful time making friends... with all the animals, especially the lovely greyhounds and cats, chickens, ducks and not forgetting George & Gilbert, the boisterous pair of donkeys! A lovely escape that will be sorely missed :) See More

Just back from a fab stay at the huts with my westie Bailey. The hut literally has everything you could need - including a blanket and treats for Bailey. Breakfast ordered in advance and delivered pr...omptly to us each morning with a little cooked breakfast for the dog on our last day! Wish we had been luckier with the weather but we were warm, dry and safe from midges. 100% recommendation and would love to go back! Thanks again Janet See More

Quite literally, perfect. So cosy in the hut, with awesome views and total peace and quiet. The huts would be wonderful at any time of year, but we loved the winter snugness - as did our dog. Top clas...s breakfast (try the porridge with whisky!). with a warm, welcoming and knowledgable host. If only we could've stayed longer... See More
