"Hank the Tank," our big bear friend who has adopted the Tahoe Keys neighborhood as his residential area, is trying harder and harder to prove to the Keys HOA that they need to allow bear boxes

On Catalina Drive this morning, Officers Sullivan and Wallace responded to a report of Hank inside a house. They banged on the exterior of the home until he popped out a back door. They then stayed in the area to ensure he continued on his way without damaging any other homes.

This bear did not break into a garage where trash was kept that he was sniffing out. He broke into a secured home, through the small window in the photo, and somehow squeezed inside.

When needed, our officers are trained to use deterrents such as loud sirens, dry-firing their tasers (makes a clicky-clack noise that the bears hate!), and beanbag rounds to remind bears that it's not very nice to break people's property!! We want them to go back to their homes in the forest.

EDIT FOR TAHOE KEYS RESIDENTS: To apply for a bear box, call the HOA front desk, Monday-Friday 830am-430pm and Saturday-Sunday 830am-1230pm. Apply for a bear box, for a fee. An Architectural Control Group will help you meet the site placement requirements and get a bear box installed.

I hope all in Tahoe who have commented on Hank's behalf continue to fight for Hank's "right to live!" Sedation to capture him and put him in a sanctuary is the "RIGHT THING TO DO & MOST HUMANE!" Hank isn't afraid because he's been in the area long enough there's been nothing to make him afraid. He feels "SAFE" here.... Tahoe Residents - COUNTLESS PEOPLE INCLUDING ME ARE ROOTING FOR YOU & hoping you're able to make Hank's "relocation to a sanctuary" the end result. THANK YOU ALL FOR CARING.

This is really a cute and sweet way to get people BEARY aware of bear safety and that we’re technically on their turf, but with the right precautions, we can totally cohabitate.

Don't let any harm come to him. He has probably been displaced due to all the fires. Not his fault. He's only trying to survive.

The Keys don’t require bear boxes???!!! We’ve had them in Tahoe paradise forever! What is the story here? No bear box in Tahoe, no right to complain about bears. Believe me. My family lived it. No bear had to die though. No bear box rule is a disgrace!! Bears are more than log carvings on your porch.

Thank you officers. We will continue to have these types of issues because people are moving further into areas where bears and other wildlife live. Also some may enjoy feeding them but don't realize that this can later lead to the bears enjoying human junk food, leading to break-ins and health problems within the best population that humans have. Let's learn to love our wildlife from a distance, and to respect others space to keep both the human and the wild life population safe. Thanks for humanely dealing with these issues.

I just feel like killing the animals is probably a little bit extreme there has to be ways to make it work for everyone involved hungry bears included

To those of you who think he should move to a reserve. Who's going to feed him? In or who is going to help him understand that human food is over? Do you think that this huge bear will settle down in nature and only live on what it finds in the forest, sorry but it will not go well. He will starve, become more agitated and die either of heartbreak because of his weight and diet or he will die so badly while starving to death.
