Yesterday, I had a unique experience. I spotted a Yellow-breasted Chat singing on a utility line. He must have been trying to get the attention of a female as this usually shy bird was not only sitting in the open but he wasn't bothered by me stopping my truck next to him. I was even able to get a short video of him singing. In the video he flew to a tree but then turned around and came right back to the line.

FYI

From the smallest hummingbird to the majestic Bald Eagle, our birds are important and worth celebrating. And we need the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to protect them.

Don’t know what the MBTA even is? Here’s your comprehensive guide to the Act—including why it's at risk.

Birders hopefully, this will help you when you are out in the field. Any day the temp is above 50 degrees snakes will be moving. Safe Birding

For Jackson, Williamson, Franklin, Counties there are lots of kites but poor reporting. If you are out and about in May and June(I encourage to make regular ebi...rd reports earlier and later but I just want May/June) look for Mississippi Kites. We need the County, description of what you saw including number of Kites, Date/Time, Latitude/Longitude (or a wide out snip with X on spot and a close up snip with X on spot from googlemap/google earth. I need enough detail to make the ebird entry. I will put your name in the ebird report if you'd like. You can always make your own report too and try and put "Kite Survey" in the report.

Some good spots to look would be Oakwood Bottoms (Otter Slough, Levy if open, Turkey Bayou), Lake of Egypt, Touch of Nature General area, the Bottoms (Jacob areas). There are birds in Carbondale and Murphysboro not reported, birds around the various DOI lakes (Devils Kitchen, Crab Orchard, Little Grassy, etc.) not being reported.

See below for birds reported last year.

As you can see the folks in your area on the Missouri side were quite busy finding Kites last year.
