Legendary mountaineer Fred Beckey passed away today at the age of 94. Rest in Peace. You inspired many!

Mr. Beckey rarely ventured into the Himalayas or the Andes, instead roaming Alaska, British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest to establish new routes.

While Yosemite gets a lot of attention, let's not forget about the great opportunities available to the south of the park in the Sierra National Forest. Many of our most popular trips explore portions of this 550-mile stretch of forest and wilderness areas. Take in this view of Chittenden Lake in the Ansel Adams Wilderness.

It's a move that seemingly would do little to address the backlog, est...

Why is everybody in such a hurry?

Most climbers considered the previous record on the Nose unbeatable—but this pair crushed it by nearly four minutes.

“It feels good to be a part of that piece of Yosemite history,” says Brad Gobright. “I don't think the record will last long, but it's nice to get the race started again.”

Introducing Our Newest Trip!
John Muir Trail Northbound: Florence Lake to Yosemite Valley (13 days)

The John Muir Trail is one of the most famous trails in the world. It follows the rugged spine of the Sierra Nevada, passing by pristine alpine lakes, wildflower-strewn meadows and hulking glaciated peaks. This section will take us northward from Florence Lake to Yosemite Valley, tackling the imposing Selden, Silver and Donahue Passes, visiting Cathedral Lakes, and continuing to the Northern Terminus of the JMT: Yosemite Valley. The JMT Northbound takes you backpacking through what the guides call “Postcard Country” among the sparkling lakes beneath the imposing Ritter Range.

On this day in 1968, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act (PL 90-542) into law. The act provides for the preservation of rivers possessing outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geologic, fish and wildlife, historic, cultural, or other similar values. Rivers, or sections of rivers, so designated are preserved in their free-flowing condition and are not dammed or otherwise impeded.

Join us on our Yosemite High Passes Loop or Red Peak Pass Loop in 2018, and spend some time hiking along the Wild and Scenic Merced River. www.symg.com
